I seem to remember that the last thing Anthony Coulls said about Green Arrow's monobloc, was that it had not been categorically stated that it was irrepairable. Only a complete strip-down would be able to ascertain this though, and that will in itself cost money.

As Kylchap has said, if a group was prepared to fund a ' Worse Case scenario' return to steam
ie strip down, potentially new cylinders/ unforeseen boiler work / frames repairs/ contingency then I think that the NRM would allow this, I think they would with any of their locos as long as certain conditions we're met.
Potentially a 7 figure sum it would take a lot of desire on somebodies / lots of peoples parts but possibly still cheaper than a newbuild.
Cant see the NRM funding anything apart from FS for the next 15 years, then maybe they will think about dusting off Mallard for her 100'th ?

There is little doubt that the procedure will be successful. Fabricated cylinders rather than castings are not unusual.
As for Green Arrow there is little chance, some would say no chance, of anything being done. The days of the NRM having staff capable of assessing and subsequently carrying out work on machinery/exhibits to be in running order are long since gone. The same could be said of the desire to have exhibits working.
If you want a V2 to run get the A1/P2 people to build one. It will probably be cheaper too.

Must admit I wasn't really putting forward the idea of restoring Green Arrow to running order per sa. Rather suggesting that the P2 boys plans appear to be opening up another option to casting a new mono-bloc should the N.R.M. wish to restore the engine.

Hoping to get to the Roadshow in York tomorrow but a combination of snow, strikes and a bad back are putting me of a little...

It is definitely going ahead, the Trust has posted as much on social media.

I think that crank axle assembly is a work of art as well as superb engineering. They have put huge effort into designing and manufacturing a component that should eliminate the main design flaw of the original engines.

I eagerly anticipate following the development of the redesigned cylinder block and valve gear as this progresses.

This really does look like superb engineering to me. Those bearings don't looks split, guessing they aren't coming off any time soon!

Surely there has to be a joint somewhere on the axlebox casting? The inner races were interference-fitted to the axle a few weeks back, and looking at the axlebox casing, it fully encloses the bearing inner races... But I'm damned if I can see the joint!

Same, if there is a joint there, the machining work something else.

Maybe the boxes go on axially???

I doubt it, split cannon boxes on axles without a crank axle were well known. Looking at those boxes, I'd say they're split on the horizontal centre line, with vertical bolts at the four corners. If you asked me to do it (which, being sensible, you will not), I'd take the castings for the two halves, rough them out, then finish machine the mating surfaces (grinding maybe) and the bolt holes, before bolting the two halves together for the rest of the finishing operations. Done right, you won't easily see the joint.

Have another look. Four bolts running down from the top, nuts visible at the bottom. And you scarcely see the joint.

That bearing is just pure engineering porn!

With yesterday's news about Tonka, will this mean the P2 having to take a back-seat for a while, perhaps even be moved out of the works so the damage can be repaired? I also wonder, if the repairs prove costly, how they might be funded? I'd presume that the P2's bank account is legally ringfenced and cannot be raided or borrowed from.
