Though I wasn't in it at first, but I am standing on someone else's steps to the left of centre with my camera hiding my face.

I'm certainly not old enough to know, but did the 'Big Four' really let even mixed traffic or goods locos out with an accumulated layer of grime? I have always had the impression this only really started in the days when steam's days were clearly numbered, so I do wonder how 'authentic' it would be for a c.1930 goods train? Yes, grime accumulates during the working day but a request seems to have been made to allow grime to build up over more than one day. Attempting to recreate c.1960 perhaps, but 30 years earlier?

I am happy to be corrected.

Here's 847 herself on a passenger working (no less!) 6 June 1937, which is just six months after being outshopped. Not exactly an image of cleanliness, in fact I'd suggest rather less tidy than 847 was yesterday. Certainly not displaying a high gloss finish.

It's at Bedhampton, about a mile or so west of Havant. See here: http://maps.nls.uk/view/105988696#zoom=4&lat=9677&lon=11881&layers=BT

Interesting date for the photo: it shows the third rail is in place for the Portsmouth Direct electrification, which didn't come into service use until about a month later. There's another view of the location form a different viewpoint here: https://mikemorant.smugmug.com/Trai...-and-BRS/Southern-electric-traction/i-j6qsSMq

I was wondering what that meant. Surely no-one in their right mind would burn such things.
Were they really burning them? If so, shame on all concerned.

Does anyone have times for the Goods train on Monday? Thinking of paying a visit and getting off the train whilst goods is at Kingscote. Thanks in advance!

The traffic notice for the weekend hasn't come out yet, so I don't know exactly. But as there is an afternoon Wealden Rambler running, my guess would be an early light engine departure to HK; then probably a complete HK - KC - SP - HK round trip, to be back to SP in time to run the Rambler. From past experience, I suspect an initial 9.30am departure from HK to KC with the goods is likely.

A couple of notes about the coming weekend.

Firstly, the A service (10:00 / 1.30 / 4.00pm departures from SP and one hour later from EG) will be the H class, Victorian four wheelers and LSWR brake 3rd. That set will continue through the Easter weekend and into next week.

Secondly, @alts1985 and others, the Goods train is running on Easter Monday, with the Stirling O1 doing the honours. Timetable as follows:

SP Dep 09:20 Light Engine Arrive HK 09:35
Dep HK 09:45 Arr KC 10:00
(Shunting at KC to swap ends with the brake van)
Dep KC 10:35 Arr HK 10:55
Dep HK 11:50 Arr SP 12:10
(Shunting at SP to swap ends with the brake van)
Dep SP 1:00 Arr HK 1:20
    (Berth goods stock)
Dep HK 2:10 Light engine Arr SP 2:25
Loco becomes Wealden Rambler engine for 3:30 departure.

Although not up on the website yet, there should be guided tours of the Carriage Works each day (Friday to Monday) over Easter for those interested.

I believe the tours are scheduled for 12.40 and 13.55 with an additional tour at 11.40 subject to demand

Recycling is ideal but may be impractical ̶ I don't know. Sending plastic to landfill isn't good, but burning with toxic fumes going untreated into the atmosphere seems considerably worse. Yes, I know you're burning coal anyway in large quantities, but I would expect the combustion products from plastics to be nastier. (Tom, what do you know about it?) Burning in a special facility where the fumes are filtered or captured may be best.
