10201-3 look nice in a 3/4 view - it's in profile they look bloody awful.

Just a thought since there are so many new build steam projects , how is the costs of a complete new build diesel loco vs. a new build steam locomotive? Cheaper or more costly? If it`s possible ,it could be interesting to compare:)

    regards
    Knut

From what I've seen of planned new-build diesels, most involve heavy modifications to existing vehicles which I assume preserves "grandfather rights" for the VAB? The most advanced of these projects is the Baby Deltic project.

To be honest, I think a new-build diesel from scratch would be much more complex (and consequently, more expensive) than new-build steam. Steam engines are fairly simple beasts, after all.

Good point, my friend:) Maybe it would be less complex if they just build a new build diesel as a static replica?

  5. It's all in the eye of the beholder though, isn't it? My girlfriend says I'm handsome, but I suspect neither you two nor most other folk would agree.

I think 10201-03 looked a lot neater, sleeker and with less 'bits bolted on' than most of their immediate contemporaries. In green with small yellow panels, 10203 looked positively modern. And what is a diesel or electric loco if it isn't a 'box with round edges'? (Unless it's the Fell, which was three boxes with not very rounded edges...)

Could that be because Bulleid specified that the locomotives adopt a similar profile to existing EMU stock ?

Perhaps this one does and I’d agree it’s good looking but most of the best looking locos were not matched to their rolling stock either in shape or livery.

Eye of the beholder .... absolutely.

My favourite diesels are the ones with long noses .... Deltics, GM E and F Units, Alco PA, Malayan Railways Class 20, etc.. Definitely not box-shaped.

I'm clearly getting more absent-minded as the years go by. I'm sure I read the above post at the time, but then a few weeks later I sent off a cheque.

    FUNDRAISING BEGINS

The Society already owns a 16SVT engine and a Class 58 diesel locomotive. These were purchased through donations.

Many more components are required. To bring 10000 to life, serious fundraising is required. The complete project is likely to cost at least £750k; much less than a new-build locomotive such as Tornado, but still a daunting sum.

The first items we would like to purchase are the bogies, currently owned by the EM2 Society. An independent engineering report has been received. We are in negotiations with that Society and await a precise price for them. Meanwhile we must raise money for their purchase.

Please consider donating a regular sum toward 10000. http://www.lms10000.org/fundraising

It will be interesting to see the outcome of these negotiations. On the one hand the bogies are surely of no use to the EM2 Society, being by now in a worse state that the ones on their loco. And they are surely of no use to anyone else except as scrap. On the other hand they are clearly useful for the IDRS. I'm put in mind of the Irish song "Ask me again" about a man who is a very determined haggler. Whatever price someone asks (when selling) or offers (when buying) your man says "Ask me again".

Can anyone comment on the similarity/suitability of the EM2 bogies and Class 58 chassis for converting to the Ivatt design, and what may be involved? There are no details on the society’s website or donations pages, and it’s the kind of thing potential donors would wish to know.
