I've seen it - and think it is very convincing. A great job.

You do realise why that finish was picked in the first place? LNER post war stock being metal, needing to fit in with pre war teak stock...etc.

To me, all I am hearing is yet another wearying anti-Thompson tirade...it's a new one, I'll admit...

Or maybe just someone expressing an aesthetic judgement? Thompson does get a bad rap from many enthusiasts, but it doesn’t automatically follow that any less than favourable comment about something of his is automatically anti-Thompson. (To a man with a hammer, every problem looks like a nail, etc etc).

1623 looks excellent. That said, as a livery, it lacks a certain imagination though given the era, a plea of extenuating circumstances is entirely fair.

Exactly. I even dislike scumbling on panels that are made of wood. Either let the natural grain show or paint without scumbling.

I recall seeing an example of badly faded LNER 'Tourist Green' (to the extent it looked like a washed out cream with lichen growth), but in good order, it's a pleasing enough colour scheme. The same applies to many former liveries. The 'Blue Pullmans' were a sorry sight after over a year OOS at Swindon back in the 70's .... very badly faded (though IIRC, still fully glazed and graffiti free - possibly this was when the CIÉ were seriously considering buying them).

Surely the fading issue is get-round-able with modern paints and varnishes?

Clearly you have never seen Wardale's fundamental design calculations for the 5AT? A weighty tome, all calculated from first principles based on the work of Porta as applied to his own designs in South Africa. They are available for purchase if you would care to carry out a proper critique of the design.

Edward Thompson’s main problem, in the minds of a few people; is that he was not Nigel Gresley.

I shall see if I can get some pennies together in the future, I have actually been interested in this project for some time, so seeing the full documentation should be fascinating.

It is difficult to reconcile that Tom after having someone come up to me at the London Festival of Railway Modelling to accuse Thompson of causing Gresley's death.

That was a new one too...!

Forgive me for my cynicism gents. I do genuinely love the scumbled look. I accept it's not everyone's cup of tea, my apologies for the grumpiness.

I'll give you that one as being clearly anti-Thompson, as well as arrant nonsense. I quite accept that Thompson was good in some respects, bad in others, just like the rest of us. My dislike of scumbling is independent of who is responsible for any particular instance of it.

Nice to see another LNER coach restored, nice to see scumbling, I just hope the colour mellows a bit over the next year or so.

I think I've never looked closely at it in the flesh. (And having visited the NRM on my last two visits to York I will be visiting somewhere different next time I'm there.) Looking at pictures on line now, if that is scumbling I would say it looks reasonably convincing, but still I don't understand why they bothered rather than just varnishing whatever natural pattern the wood has or hasn't.

I will form my opinion of the Trust's new Mk III rake if and when I ride in it.

I think that you might be over-reacting somewhat on this. No-one has even mentioned the designers particularly, nor compared his designs favourably or unfavourably to any preceding or successive designer. Several people commented favourably on the appearance of a railway carriage. One person stated that he felt the paint finish did not suit his taste.

Not actually wearying, not anti-Thompson, nor indeed a tirade

The point is, that as an NER carriage the dynamometer car probably has some mahogany panels on it, which are a completely different colour and grain pattern. This was the case with many pre-grouping carriages, which is why carriages were scumbled to match.

I suspect had nationalisation not intervened a painted conventional livery would have been adopted once the steel panelled carriages were more numerous.

As for being modern, remember the LNER were the first to experiment with a vinyl type covering livery with rexine on the Silver Jubilee and some tourist stock . Now decades later vinyl wraps on passenger stock are common place.
