    Afternoon all,

I am looking for a pattern, or better yet still, to borrow a 9F piston front cover for a while. If anyone knows or has any contacts that may allow us to borrow the pattern or cover - please let me know!

During routine inspection, we found our RHS piston cover has a crack, making the engine serviceable... Bit of a nightmare to be honest!

    Thanks
    Joe Issitt

Have you investigated getting it metal stitched as performed by the likes of Metalock and others?

I know one of the covers has been stitched last year, and I am not sure if it is the same one. I've just been asked to see if we a pattern or 'spare' available.

From the picture (and its not a good one) I've seen it doesn't look particularly good.

Why can't a cracked cover be used as a pattern? Glued together if need be.

From his previous posts I'd say it's whichever 9F is at the NNR...

Cast objects are generally made oversized to allow any faces required to be smooth/ accurate to be machined. finished items have already been through this process so you would have to build up the machineable faces ... #might as well make a pattern

Plus the shrinkage allowance for the casting from the pattern. So if you use a finished object as the pattern, it will be undersize as a rough casting.

Original items have been used as patterns for probably as long as casting has been around. It depends on what is being reproduced. Complex castings or those requiring cores won't reproduce but I bet there isn't a moulder alive that hasn't produced a mould from an original with a bit of 'wiggling it around' in the sand.

Castings need a shrinkage and machining allowance. pehaps laser scanning, allowances added in CAD and then a polystyrene pattern.
