I like to think I'm a practical engineer, rather than knowledgeable, and I have had castings made from originals on more than one occasion in my past life. Even glued plywood veneer around circular items to provide a machining allowance. If you are looking at one-off jobs machining more off is probably a cheaper option than having a bespoke pattern made. I wouldn't consider it for a cylinder cover, though, unless it was a very simple one.

Thanks all for your assitance in sourcing a pattern or spare. A casting arrived at Weybourne Workshop this afternoon. Hopefully we can get it machined up and ready to go!

Was that out of the UK wide 'stores' or has it just been cast? If the latter, that's a foundry short of work or pulling out all the stops to help.

Not a major pattern making exercise but always worth being able to trace any pattern promptly.

A clue to the pattern might be any letters or numbers on the casting you have.
(Though for all I know it could be an original BR one that has come to hand
    - plenty of time for any casting stresses to work themselves out!)

Thanks for the response. I did wonder if this was the case. Another example of the cooperation that the heritage railway movement has in plenty.
