You have to marvel at the enthusiasm of enthusiasts.

Away from London before 6 am and then nearly two hours kicking your heels at Battersby. All unavoidable I am sure but what a mission. Hope the sun shines.

The timetable shows the tour will cross with Northern's Whitby-Middlesbrough service in P1 at Battersby, surely the platform isn't that long?

Perhaps not the platform itself, but the total length of track between the turnout and the end is long enough, so it is physically possible to fit both trains at once. Whether the signalling can handle it is a different question.

Thanks - wasn't sure if the headshunt was allowed for passenger trains. The signalling is fine with a cross there, if a bit slow, there's one cross on Sunday mornings in the current timetable.

Despite tht best efforts of the 8f we were late arriving at Middlesbrough and then had to wait for a service train, eventually left nearly 25 down.
We now learn that the water tanker that is to meet us at Battersby has had to reroute due to a landslip on the approach road, so we will go to Battersby, then after a short stop reverse to a level crossing to meet the tanket, then back to Battersby to cross the service train before continuing to Whitby. Simple really.

Well plan B has hit a snag, a points problem has stopped us from going the half mile towards Whitby to meet the tanker......

Very minor I understand, easily and quickly rectified. Water problem solved, decided that there is sufficient to get to Whitby.

Those on board can probably qualify, but I was going by a map which shows a considerable distance between the platforms and where the lines diverge. I was wondering how the signalling copes, but evidently it does.
