As important as the means to purchase and fund the overhaul is the question of workshop capacity too. All the major workshops seem mowed out so even when 44767 does change hands it might still face a lengthy wait, more is the pity.

Thanks chaps the nods and winks, appreciate it. Can certainly do a lot with a pair of fives as Mr Riley has proved.

Certainly a lot more he could do if he had two pairs of Black 5s! If George was to change hands, Team Riley would be the perfect next chapter for the engine...

Are there enough railtours for two pairs of black 5s, and enough staff to prep/maintain/support them?

Think 45231 and 44767 would also make an excellent pair if it ever came off.

Hopefully any new owner will remove the phoney name.

Hopefully not. It has carried it longer than not carried it. It was named to mark an important anniversary and like it or not the name is part of the locomotive's history.

    Sawdust.

Agreed but I suppose its had the name for 43 of its 70 years so arguably now firmly part of its' identity?

Yep, the curious world of some of the enthusiast fraternity that thinks history stopped around oh say 1968!

Froth territory alert! As I said the name is very much a part of 44767s history, but I marginally prefer it without if it is otherwise presented in BR/LMS vintage. For the latter though it would need the double blastpipe/chimney reinstating to be accurate. Now that would be speculation!

I have seen the locomotive in bits in photos. Has the overhaul proved more expensive than expected and so has stalled? I presume she is still owned by Ian Storey who has a workshop that undertook work on the standard 4 now on nnr? Being fitted with stephenson link and roller bearings is she freer running than other black 5s?

According yo reports in the railway press late last year Mr Storey has put 44767 on the market "as is", a previous partnership having been ended by mutual agreement before the conclusion of the current works. Hence the speculation about a potential new owner. The extent of work required seems to have been greater than expected when PRCLT was contracted some time ago.

The roller bearings make a very noticeable difference at low speeds. I suspect there is less at higher speeds but this is only opinion and not measured in any way.
From what I understand, it needs a huge amount of work doing to it to make it fit for purpose. Some of the necessary kit is to hand but much isn't. I have been told of the main problems but my memory isn't good enough to start quoting.

Rumour (and I stress its a rumour, though I've heard it has come from a serious potential buyer)is he's asking £1M for the loco "as is". If it is true (and again, I stress the "if"!), I don't think there are many out there, apart from the aforementioned owner of Icons of Steam who would be prepared to pay that, based on what complete locos with current certificates have changed ownership for. I have heard of at least one other potential buyer at a more realistic price, though. We shall see! Personally, I rather hope it stays in the hands of an individual or a heritage railway as I just cannot see how the increasing numbers of locos with main line aspirations can be accommodated. Ideally, of course (I'm biased!) it would return to the NYMR, where it began its preserved working life and was a real asset to the railway.
