I know they were all fairly useless, it will be interesting to see how the Hengsit lot tacke the shortcomings as they say they will do. The main one was they were underboilered, address that and you end up with a Britannia

Slight increase in Boiler Pressure ? 36sq Feet of Grate is Plenty for a class 6. just needs better draughting. Same could be said of Jubilees when first built, always stick a Royal Scot boiler on them

It was true of the 5XPs to the end. If you got one in good nick, a good crew and good coal, they could be outstanding. But get any one of those parameters wrong and the needle was ever on a downward path.

I remember reading (although I can't remember where) that they weren't bad engines by any stretch of the imagination. Merely the problem was they were often fired and driven like Britannia's were fired and driven, but that wasn't the best way to treat them. Couple that with there not being very many of them which meant crews didn't have as much of an opportunity to familiarise themselves with them and learn their particular ways, and that meant crews didn't work out how to get the best out of them until they started to be withdrawn.
Also, rumour has it that lack of attention on the part of shed foreman's allocations meant they ended up on jobs that required Class 7 locos, because they looked similar enough to Brits to be confused with them (although I have my doubts about that particular notion).

All of the railwaymen that I know that worked them have nothing but good things to say about them. They as the Jubilees before them were often asked to work way beyond their design.

There seem to be two websites. Is the hengistloco.co.uk website meant to be live?

Aah .. but surely you'd need to paint a 'Clan' in BR lined black to really compare like with like. [runs for cover]

But we were talking about Jubilees - and having seen the Black and Red and they look best in Green IMHO. would like to see a Black 5 in BR Green though...
If they did a Clan Douglas (Dubh-glas) that would be an excuse for an all black livery...
