But you haven't lost your money. The tour is still going ahead (tempting fate I know, as someone who was on the 'North Briton' with added Shed Power) and you are taking part in Tornado's first 90mph tour.

If someone wants to point fingers, maybe it should be as much at UK Railtours and DB Cargo as well as the A1SLT who should have said that due to the high-speed running, it won't be with Mk. 1s; that CoE as kindly provided by @Bean-counter has been in force since 2012, after all. And remember; in the near future, the A1SLT will be running tours with its own Mk. 3s. If potential customers were told back when the tour was announced that it would have not been Mk. 1 stock, would it have had any impact on bookings?

I'll certainly be most vexed if I haven't got my table for two

It wouldn't have impacted on my booking but I have to say that if I'm stuck in a carriage with a bunch of people whinging about the situation all the way to York and back I will be very unhappy!

  4. Steven,
I called UK rail tours at 10:10 and was told that the A1 people would not entertain refunds for this Saturdays train.
I then cancelled my ticket for the Talisman in July.
This is my last post on the subject.

Whilst I'm still looking forward to the prospect of being able to ride behind steam at 90, if I'm really honest I don't think I would have booked had it been known in advance it would have been air con Mk. 2's. Especially as I'm dragging the girlfriend along for her first mainline steam tour in Premier Dining, Mk. 1's would have definitely been preferable and I think provided a nicer environment.

One only has to look at the fuss generated on the WNXX forum when Pathfinder started to use air cons on a number of diesel charters a while back that led them to make a statement on which tours would use them and which wouldn't.

I'm not on this tour but if I were and was accompanied by my wife and can guarantee she would be happier dining and gliding along in air conditioned comfort in as Mk2 than she would be bouncing around in a Mk1 mopping soup up out of her lap whilst being grit blasted by Tornado's exhaust at 90mph!

Four first class dining plus four standard class and one for staff. Quite a light load.

What does seem to be missing is common sense. Locomotive approved to pull passenger trains at 90 mph. Mk I coaches approved to carry passengers at 100 mph, subject to some conditions, notably supplementary door locks. Put the coaches behind the locomotive and the combination is limited to 75 mph.

Depending where we are on the train we may hear more sound from the generator car than from the loco. But, to be honest, even in Mk Is there's quite a lot of the time when you don't hear the loco. And we still get our ride, with a maximum speed likely to be well above 75 mph and probably near enough 90. Those in dining still get fed. We still get several hours in York. Cup definitely more than half full.

I suspect that most of us have had our moan today on this forum! By Saturday, I'm sure that I personally will have got over the one and only disappointment and will be concentrating on the very many positives about this tour, so anyone who may find themselves near me in Coach H, fear not. I may be somewhat dopey after a 4.30AM start, but I won't be whinging - I promise!!

Plus a Restaurant Car, Buffet Car? and the Generator Car. Guessing the seperate Buffet Car as very reliably informed train is 11+POB.

We're in coach H. Try not to whinge but to add to the woes of coffin travel behind steam, we had to book an overnighter in London as the 0530 Bristol that normally gets in at 0714 has been repathed via Westbury and retimed to an 0540 start and 0739 arr this Saturday. Too tight to risk it.

I don't mind what coaching stock Tornado is hauling this Saturday on its 90 mph run it will be a brilliant to see it especially I'm filming it, as long it's running.

I concur with one or two of the posts above in that I have paid for a high speed steam run, not the carriages. They could string a load of caravans on the back and I'd be happy. As long as I don't have the misfortune of copping a constantly moaning 'erbert at my table, it'll be a good day of logging section speeds.

It seems half this forum will be in Coach H. Shall we come up with a NatPres handshake/codeword? ;)

Alternatively, if it was not or people like the A1ST, everybody would be trundling around at 25mph, on a preserved line instead.

I don't get this wet knicker moment about it being a Mk2, which is much safer than a Mk1, and once you get moving, all you get is wind noise from the open window....

Have no doubt it will be a triumph, and good luck to the A1ST.
