Not if you're sat at the front. Had some glorious sounds coming in through the open toplight on 60163's superb run to Penzance last year.

Ah - but for noise you need banks. On the ECML at 90mph a 3 cyl loco will be purring along. If the recent Sulis & Sarum was anything to go by, it'll be the (very) smart get-aways that provide the best audio. Alternatively stick something antiquated from Swindon on the front ;)

You could also be unlucky and have the generator car at the front, but I do take your point, up to a certain degree, on any mainline trip I have done with Tornado, the noise can be heard until 20mph, then it subsides, as wind noise increases.

    However, each to there own.

Now those look pretty good to me. By my reckoning, an average of about 71mph from Digswell Junction to Grantham, and 71mph between Grantham and York on the outward. Average of 66mph York-Grantham on return, and seems slightly more measured running overall, but point-point sections might be more sprightly. However, it does mean 112 miles non-stop running from York to Peterborough, which without a REG is pretty bloody good in itself...

You need a fast car for that ( and the ability to spot speed cameras)

Cars fast enough but still doubt I could beat Tornado. The A1/A14 roadworks don’t help either.

Remind me, how many cylinders shy of 6 are you? No good blaming the road works.

The diesel will probably go and sit in the sidings next to the station at Kings Cross. They’re often used as Thunderbirds in case of a problem on the ECML.

FWIW I've combined the times for those paths from RTT into a single PDF. The Ebor Flyer's times are within a few minutes of the Q times all the way from Potters Bar to York.

Yes these are very good paths! Tallington to Stoke Jn is 15 miles, booked 12 mins on the outward and 10 mins on the return. So 75 mph uphill and 90 mph downhill.

In Nov 2000 Tornado with 13 on did
Tallington - Stoke Jn in 11m 41s, with two minimae a tad under 74 mph.

Whilst Mallard's downhill record will not be challenged, its clearing Stoke uphill at 80+ with 11 on could be.

Fingers crossed this all works out on Saturday and the rolling stock issues are sorted in time for the Talisman.

I'm pleased to see that a bit of common sense has returned to this thread. By my reckoning, in 24 hours time we hopefully will see a steam train running up the ECML in a scenario that, 60 years ago, would have been seen as unthinkable in 2018. I suggest that the rolling stock is just an irritation. We probably should be focusing more on hoping that we get to Grantham on time and that the watering activity goes smoothly. With the 0908 KGX to YRK only five minutes behind us all the way from Grantham and an Edinburgh after that, we will have to be away on time or the journey northwards may be rather more problematic.

And that's the point; it really is that tight. It's been done before in 77 min with a 75 limit but 70 min leaves little room for manouevre. So here's hoping.

IIRC its been done in 74 mins. It'll take 4 mins to get back onto the ECML so 70 mins from the loop is equivalent to say a 68 minute booking from the station.

Absolutely, Al. The rolling stock issue was for many of us a disappointment, but no more than that - not a show stopper by any stretch of the imagination. Having accepted it and got over it, I for one am very much looking forward to what will be a marvellous day tomorrow - apart from the moment when my alarm clock goes off! I'm particularly delighted that at least two expert train timers (Messrs Shireman and Wistle) are in the same carriage as me. Hopefully they will inform us when we hit the magic 90, which I'm sure we will. Those remarkable timings don't give us the option of noodling around.
