As they gathered round the cinders of their fabled lord, King Coal,

Hallowed by thy name, Thy Kingdom come
Stress will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our tempered steel
And forgive us our rounding errors
As we forgive those who round down against us
And lead us not into exceeding the Youngs modulus
but deliver us from non recoverable plastic deformation
    For maths is the kingdom
And the Water and the Steam...

Because conjecture is far more entertaining than waiting.
Personally I'd be very wary of stating what will or won't be required and what facilities will or won't be required unless I'd seen the damage. A failure affecting a single oil feed is an entirely different proposition to a failure affecting many oil feeds. There are clearly a very wide range of possible scenarios for the repair, and I'm not sure its much more helpful to imagine the least expensive possibility than to imagine the most.

The only theory/solution I’ve laughed more at is that the damage occurred due to hitting a dog..

I saw half a dog on a level crossing when I was a kid. The damage was indeed, considerable.

Pic on Faece Book. Tornado having motion taken down in the yard at NVR. No doubt will want to check all the parts in the system and maybe overhaul ahead of the 5 year whilst waiting for replacement bits.

I would have thought that every item from the cylinders to the crank axle and maybe beyond is being carefully examined.

Is it to early to blame the cramped space for the inside valve gear?
The DB three-cylinder Pacifics had all kind of maintenance troubles in their final very high speed/long runs days.
The Thompson A2/2 had more room inside the frames
According to mr Chapelon an unsuperheated boiler can be made more efficient within a given outline and valves will not be so seize prone

This is getting silly - how many millions of miles did Peppercorn Pacifics run in their hayday between major failures?

It seems people want to effect all manner of changes on the basis of a one-off event. It’s in the nature of such unusual events that they could happen at any time even if, when averaged out, they are rare.
