Indeed...their first loco, originally destined for the Lakeside branch until a road building issue chopped the bit from Ulverston - Haverthwaite and brought about a split of the 10A workforce and stock. My lasting impression of 'sixty four forty one' was hand coaling her with buckets for a 'steaming day' in the early years at 10A.

The ultimately ill-fated Lakeside Estates project that all the locos initially preserved at Carnforth, some 50 years ago now, were intended to support. As I understand it the plan was to use 10A as tbe base and send locos via the mainline each day to work the branch to Lakeside?
What a fleet that would have been to call on, 5 black fives, two fairburn tanks, a B1, Ivatt .... amazing.

Correct. One side didn't feel the LHR was worth pursuing and decided to stick with the steam loco depot/museum theme. As I've said before many times down the years, 10A was a great place to be a volunteer. Shame it all came to an end...

    Maybe again one day .......
Steamtown was heaven to me as a youngster, great belnd of industrials I was accustomed to and an introduction to bigger cousins including an A3, A4 and V2 based there for quite some time each as I recall. Last time I was there was just after the late Sir Bob had sold up to the present owner. Had a great play after hours on the 15" line.
    Happy memories.

Last I heard is the current owner chose to move it, the boiler is going over to West Coast to be repaired, the loco itself is apparantly in very good fettle.

Excellent news- I hope she is going to work at the L&HR in the future!

Didn't 46441 work the Windermere branch in BR days too?

Both Fairburns have carried BR black for at least the last twenty years, and one of the FR liveried Austerities left the line some little time ago.

Yawn. In Black she'll just be another Ivatt. In Red she's Betty's Ivatt, which is a far greater part of her history than the LMS and BR have been combined.

Hasn't 6441 pretty much always been in Red since she went to Carnforth in 196? Whether it was LMS or BR? I like it like that though, in 1998 I had 46441/3 and 46521 in the space of about 2/3 weeks on the East Lancs and SVR one Red, one Black and one Green!

IMG_20160828_0016.jpg It's been in maroon since 1968. Here it is at Carnforth fifty years ago on the afternoon of Sat 3rd August '68, sandwiched between 42073 and 61306. While all three are still with us ex Templecombe 75009, alongside the Fairburn tank, was not so lucky. Hope this is of interest.

46441 had a short spell in BR black late 90s, early 2000s which I think it carried until it was stopped for overhaul.

Not for a while I should imagine, not sure how much but it will need work doing to it.

Is this the first ex-BR tender locomotive on the line since the ‘70s?

Perchance a chance to return to the main line at some time ? A view of her last main line run IIRC taken on 19/03/95 shortly before withdrawal from main line service.

Why move the loco to Haverthwaite and the boiler to Carnforth if one was thinking of running it on NR? Surely it would be more cost effective to do the whole thing at Carnforth? And - would it be able to haul big enough loads to justify the expense of fitting main line equipment? The main line really is the preserve of class 5s and larger nowadays.

I think the owner and Mr Smith have a close friendship, and who's said it'll be going mainline again?
