I wonder if Saturdays unpleasant events and the publicity afterwards have maybe reminded people what a wonderful achievement that building Tornado was in the first place? And maybe that has encouraged a few more people to get behind both Tornado and Prince of Wales?

There has been so much wonderful support for the trust and the two locomotives in the last week.

I daren't day it out loud, but if the failure Saturday means we can improve the A1, support it better, get the P2 built and get back to high speed running, then maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.

It has certainly, for me at any rate, been an absolute lesson in professionalism that other groups and individuals could learn from, particularly online.

On a side note, it is disheartening to see people still using the term “Tonka” in regards Tornado and I find it incredible that such infantile namecalling is still in vogue.

The tribalism that exists in railways needs to get a grip. We’re all in this together. New builds, restorations, railways, rail tours, the lot.

I really don't see why people take offense at this nick-name. Tornado does get called some derogatory names by a few people, but "Tonka" seems quite affectionate. Since it's widespread in the RAF as a pet name for the jets after which 60163 is named, it's not surprising it has been adopted by some for the loco. I'd not heard it until it came up in this thread, but it made me smile and seems quite appropriate. I had a couple of Tonka toys as a kid. I was very found of them. They were much better constructed than most of my toys. They were both rather large and bright green. ;-)

I don’t think I would mind - quite - so much if I hadn’t heard it being used extremely derogatively a number of times, including by several gentlemen from other loco owning groups who should know better.

I’ve never heard it called Tonka by the trust and I’d never known the RAF Tornadoes were either. I am now curious so off I go to do some googling...

Perhaps P2 will end up with a couple of extra large smoke deflectors, entirely in keeping with her current namesake.

David Elliot has got this covered. The casing behind the chimney will incorporate (actually I think it already incorporates?) some changes to make smoke deflection easier.

Looking at ofpictures the P2 class with the extra set of smoke deflectors I find them really aesthetic unfavorable so Ihope such never will being fitted..
By the way, such smoke deflectors were also fitted to the huge belgian pacific class 1 and the South australian pacific no 621( preserved). I have posted two videos from Youtube of them both:)

    kind regards
    :)

    Hi Knut,

I think we can safely say that the Earl Marischal-style smoke deflectors will never get fitted to 2007 :)
