It's not really an auction though e.g. the highest bid does not necessarily win and the vendor may sell outside of this process. It sounds as though the likely buyer is known and this process is just to avoid accusations that a better deal was not obtained. Is there more than one or two potential buyers who would be interested in conserving it (rather than scrapping it)?

More to the point what exactly happened to the owning society - it seems to have gone bust?

At this point I have to say it would be grand if our NRM could step in and buy it as a splendid example of British engineering, but then keep it in Australia.

Is 3016 likely to come up for auction too or was that separately owned?

Transport Heritage NSW and the NSW Rail Museum are pleased to announce it has entered into a storage and use agreement with the new owners of Beyer-Garratt steam locomotive 6029.
This iconic steam locomotive will be in steam and on display at this weekend’s Thirlmere Festival of Steam and will operate at a number of our programmed events in 2018.

Here it is in action, climbing the bank to Thirlmere on Monday. 4201 is cut in, 4490 and 4001 are shut down. The load appears to be 13 carriages for 700 tonnes + teh two POTS units (another 200 tonnes) so an all up load, excluding 4201 and 6029 of something approaching 850 tonnes.

Same day, same place, 3642 hauling 6/260 tonnes.

    Neither of them my videos.

As a comparison, Bevan Wall has provided the following vision of 5910 battling the same hill in 1996.

Here's why the locomotives seem to be having a hard time of it. The camera is roughly at the 89 km peg for all three videos.

It brings to mind a sight I once saw in the last days of regular steam where an 'enthusiast' ran up the track dragging a pound of butter along the railhead.
