For a class 4, perhaps. Not unknown, though.

 

6023 in the sunshine at Eardington this afternoon, as said above is now facing south.

 

Apparently moving to Paignton for the summer season after the GWSR gala - exact dates not given but should be fun watching this one up Goodrington Bank with a full summer load on!

 

The King will no doubt make it up there happily, in contrast to certain Pacifics that have had to be rescued!

Severn Valley Bridgnorth shop often has it on sale if you are in the vicinity - I was in there last Saturday but unfortunately can't confirm if it was in stock.

 

Failed at Bridgnorth today, leaking tubes. This was found during spark arrestor inspection after large lineside fire.

After a quite remarkable run northbound to Bridgnorth yesterday, I began to wonder if something was amiss. First, whilst 6023 was beng coaled in Bridgnorth yard the driver appeared concerned about something he was looking at between the frames at the front of the loco, ie where you can see the valve gear for the inside cylinders. However the loco was placed at the head of its return service, but by then the line was at a standstill due to lineside fires caused by the King.
The loco was then returned to the yard, one of its minders saying that a pit was necessary to examine the screens around the ashpan, which presumably limit what can fall onto the track. Presumably then as the loco cooled, they found it had one or more leaking tubes, and at that point the fire irons came off the tender to draw the fire. End of operations for the day. I thought it then inappropriate to try and glean further information about the extent of the problem.
The run northbound will stay with me for a long time. The sheer power of the loco. Eardington bank didn't exist as far as 6023 was concerned!

Sad news regarding 6023 but ..it happens. The King was replaced by Taw Valley today. <BJ>

 

Likely to be the same tomorrow as well.

 

Only a single tube is leaking. The hole (or split) in the tube caused a sufficient rate of water loss for the loco to be declared a failure. Unfortunately the tube in question is in a rather awkward position which will probably neccessitate the removal of some superheater elements to gain access. The tube can then be plugged or replaced as necessary.

 

And once you've done that you start wondering about the other couple of dozen tubes...

Any news about repairs to 6023? Cannot see anything SVR-wise, but current news is never easy to glean from SVR sources.

 

Well there a pictures on FB of smoke from the chimney but it looks like a warming fire given that work was still underway earlier in the day. So too early probably to say it has been tested. Perhaps tomorrow?

 

For me, that is a perfect combination of loco and carriage colours The very first time I saw Sir Nigel Gresley on the mainline it was with this combination of liveries and it has stuck with me.

 

BR Blue and Carmine and Cream, it's a top combination.

 

Nice, but chocolate and cream stock would be la crème de la crème.
