And who is the Duke of Rothesay? A certain jug-eared Old Gordonstounian by the name of Charlie...

R.H.N. Hardy - Its a nice choice, as would be Toram Beg.

There is of course, a not insignificant chance that his mother might no longer be with us when she enters service in say 2022, and the Prince of Wales might a different fellow? But certainly, the Duke of Rothesay would have been a far better name.

I fully expect Her Majesty WILL still be around in 4 years' time... the old dear shows no sign of giving up yet, and she's led a healthier lifestyle than her famously long-lived mother... I'd be extremely surprised if she didn't beat her mum's 101 years and 238 days, or even Princess Alice's 102 years and 309 days...

I would point out that many pages ago, I actually told Johnb that it would be called "Duke Of Rothesay" when working in Scotland. My point was, which seems to have gone over a few heads, was why wasn't it going to be called "Duke Of Rothesay" all the time, thus keeping the Scottish theme alive. ;)

Toram Beg sounds more like the name of a NBR Scott class - stable mate to Wandering Willie.

I seem to recall in one of his books Norman McKillop talking about driving the V4 when it was first built.

Interestingly the Steamindex page for Norman McKillop has a photo of him with Dick Hardy (unfortunately I can't see the photo as I get a broken link).

Yes, that's the connection; Toram ' beg ( wee norm.) was a Nom de plume used by Norman McKillop

Much as I think R.H.N Hardy would be a great name, would it resonate with the Great British public?

Does it have to? If names have to resonate with the Great Unwashed then we are once again heading down the path of Chuffy McChuff-Face.

Will the V3 and the K3 be named? I'm unlikely to be around to see those built, but they shouldn't be.

Yes I think if your going to name a loco it should be something that makes you stop and think. Names like Tornado, Prince of Wales and Beachy Head do resonate with the great unwashed as you put it. Much as I like and respect the late R.H.N. Hardy how well known is he outside circles involving people like us?

If you wish to garner support from outside enthusiast circles then IMO yes you do need to have a name that resonates with the “great unwashed” but at the same time you don’t have to go down the Chuffy McChuffface road.

Duke of Rothesay, a name suggested in a couple of previous posts here, would seem to be an apt name. It also is suggested that that name is already flagged up. ;)
