Delays and cancellations after someone fell under 01 202 this morning at Trier.

 

The only effect on the Gerolstein steam service was the V200 taking over 01 202’s second run of the day.

 

A couple of positioning moves plus action from day 1 of the event.

It is more and more difficult to organise, these were all specials rather than the previous steam subbing on timetable due to increased speeds with new stock and tight station stops, hence a relatively quiet monday - the only true working day out of the 4 - they are subsidised by the region, passenger loadings on some services seemed very light, so we will have to wait for the evaluation. For me it was unfortunately nothing like the previous incarnations, the annual Dresden festival is however safe and is well worth the journey.

 

I went with Rail Trail to this event and travelled out on Friday. They had suggested intinery's for the Saturday and Sunday for everyone ( Due to the large number of people travelling with them - approx 130 I was told, we were split into a number of groups), with options for Monday and Tuesday.

Day 1

Arrived at the station on a sunny morning for the 7:58 double departarture 03-1010 to Saarbrucken, and 52-8154 to Nenning, the later I would be travelling on. 03-1010 arrived first in platform 12. After the service left 52-8154 arrived in platform 11. I managed to to get a seat in the front coach on the side adjacent to the the Saarbrucken train. We left on time with 03-10-10 always slightly ahead, we were signal checked just before Karhaus and saw the other train continue on its way to Saarbrucken.
A pleasant run down to Nenning and a good photo oppourtunity. We watched the loco run run and depart back to Trier, while we boarded our coach to Saarbrucken.We arrived with about before departure, saw 03-1010 headeing off for turning after being serviced. 03-1010 arrived back in plenty of time before departure and time to taken photos's with the loco in the sun. A lively run to Volklinggen passing 01-1075 on the way, where we picked up a number of passengers who have got off that train. Plenty of fast running back to Trier, either side of the water stop at Saarburg. I wish I had brought my GPS with me. My proposed interery was 52-1360 to Wittlich, although 01-202 to Gerolstein was suggested as alternative on the day.On arrival at Trier I decided to see if 52-1360 was there, it had arrived late on Friday, and its crew were apparantly out of hours so its earlier trips were diesel hauled.It was and in platform 11 North, and a good photo oppourtunity from platform 12.
78-468 then arrived with the train from Gerolstein. I then wandered over to the stalls on plaform 11. I had not decided which train to taken when a group of firemen rushed passed me down the subway and headed for the South end of platform 13, at the time assumned it was an issue with the loco. 78-468 was still coupled to the coaches which formed the 14:18 to Gerolstein at the North end of platform 13 ,while 01-202 was still at the south end , so I decided to take the 14:14 with 52-1360 to Wittlich, but with only getting on 2 minutes before deaprture no chance of a window seat. I was a leisurely run outwood. The train seem to be emptier on the return, there was no problem with getting a window seat, although we a pathing and a water stop on the return, the run was more enjoyable. The suggested intinery was to contiue to Wellen before returning to Trier but I decided to get off off at Trier after an enjoyable day.

Day 2

Today there was two options for the first train, skip breakfast and catch the 6:48 to Gerolstein hauled by 52-8195 and taken the service train back, or have breakfast and take the 78-468 to Gerolstein and get off at Speicher at catch the same service train back to Trier. As this was a holiday I chose the later. A wet morning awaited us, we left Trier on time for what turned out to be an unexpected lively run up to Speicher, along the most scenic line to date. I rushed to take a picture of the departure despite the weather, perching on a fence, and only realising after wards that I had set the camera on a lot higher ISO than planned.We managed to taken shelter at the station and joined the late arriving serice train to Trier. I managed to dry out on the service train, and sun and blue skies were awaiting us at Trier, with 01-202 standing in one of the through lines adjacent platform 13. The station seemed busier than the previous day and it appeared that a large group wanted to catch the 10:53 to Luxembourg hauled by CFL 5519, like us. A group of us manged to find a compartment in coach behind the loco with only one person sitting in it. The person sitting opposite me seemed familier but I could not remember a name. It was only later that it realised it was Adrian Palmer who had run a photo charter I had been on with 6023 at the GC five years ago.This loco was not very comfortable to ride behind at speed ( like being a taffy tank but a lot worse) .We seem to take an indirect route into Luxembourg, and arrived at platform 9 with a unit in the adjacent platform. We were hoping our train would depart towards us for a better photograph, but the whole train then reversed out of the station to be serviced. I did a very quick tour of Luxembourg , and returned to the station. We headed away on time with CFL 5519 tender first, a slighly smoother run than onwards. On return to Trier,while the suggested intinery on the return was 52-8154 to Wittlich, a number of decided that 78-468 to Bitburg ( outwood via Trier West) and return was a far better option. The 78 again provided a lively run up the line to Bitberg through the Ardennes Forest. We stopped at Daufenbach to let two servivce trains pass , due to the incident the day before they were not allowing anyone passed the end of the platform to take photgraphs, and one of passengers spent the whole time arguing with the station staff. On arrival at Bitburg while the sun was in the wrong place for any decent shots, the bar in the station building with a supply of local bottled beers move than compensated for this. I purchased Bitberg wheat beer for the return jouney, which rounded off another enjoyable day.

Regarding the route in Luxembourg, from Oetrange there are two routes to Luxembourg City, one enters the main station from the north, the other from the south which is not such a regular passenger route and is used more by freights between Germany and Bettembourg yard avoiding the station - we took the latter, and we were also diverted through the yard to the south of Luxembourg station both ways (the main line continues at a higher level alongside the yard). I think this was due to engineering works to the north of the station which meant there were bus substitutions for anyone travelling north. I thought the station was very quiet for this reason! I was also on the Railtrail tour, and if you travelled back with them on Wednesday, you will have entered Luxembourg City via the usual north route.

I travelled via Luxembourg outward on Friday ( but we only had 7 minutes to get from platform 1 to platform 10 so did not take it all in when leaving ) and on the return where I recognised a yellow engineering vehicle we passed on the viaduct, which I seen from my quick tour tour of Luxembourg and knew for certain we entered the station via another route.

 

Day 3

The Brohltalbahn

We travelled to the Brohltalbahn by coach since we were having a private charter down to the river , before the trip to Englin.We arrived about 9am and quickly boarded the train which headed towards the deport then right across the road over a bridge which crossed the mainline, and decended until we were level and parrallel with it. We reveresed into the exchange sidings to enable us to access the line to the river, then proceeded forwards across the main road where it changes dual carriageway to single carriageway and arrived at Brohl Rheinanlagen where we had a photo stop. We then then proceed further along the line where it runs parallel with the road, and stopped to just before it heads to down nto a quay.We had a couple of run past then headed to Brohl station where further coaches were added to ther rear of the train. The train was now Steam, loco 11sm, van, 8 coaches and diesel D2 at the rear, the paassengers from the hertiage electric service from Trier arrived, boarded and we left about 5 minutes late. In addtion to the timetabled stops at Burgbrohl and Oberzisssen, there was one at Brenk ( where the remaining quarry is ) to have a look at the loco, where the sun was briefly out on what was mainly a cold dull day, before the final climb to Engein.The gradient steepens to 1:20 after Oberzisssen ( the maximum before that mentioned on the leaflet I have is 1:40) , the speed fall to walking pace and the upper part of the line is more open and scenic. On arrival, which was a least 20 miniutes late, there was a scrum for food available and you had to gradually push yourself to the front to stand a chance of being served.There was a queue for drinks inside the building , but the beer ran out after 3 customers were served . I did not hear how mainly more people were served beer after the barrel was changed. Very poorly organised.

After the break we returned to Brohl, those who wanted to return earlier caught the vintage Electric while the rest of us went to the DB musuem at Koblenz before returning to Trier.

Day 4

While there was an optional trip to Neustadt and the Kuckuksbahnel , I decided stay in Trier around the station, taking photos apart from a run up to Volkinlingen behind 01 -1075, and returning behind 03-1010.
03-1010 was the more impressive of the two.

I liked the Brohltalbahn, there were some great climbs with the steam loco. The train, and the station at Engeln, were too crowded for my liking - the railway was a victim of its own success? It wasn't really prepared for there being so many people. I decided at Engeln not to queue, but to wait for things to calm down. Luckily there were still bratwurst and potato salad left a couple of minutes before departure, and I managed to find a seat on the train back to Brohl.

It made me want to come back on a 'normal' day, but I think it is normally diesel worked with steam only on 'high days and holidays'. My wife and I had a nice trip behind a diesel one way (from Engeln) as part of a package coach tour some years ago, but steam is the icing on the cake!

I also enjoyed the Brohltalbahn, they managed to take everyone who wanted to travel so on that side they were prepared , but seem badly organised on the catering side. The were a guy trying to sell souvenirs, but because of the scrum for the food next to him,which I was in, I did not see anyone but anything from him.

 

The scrum for food could have been avoided if they had set up zig-zag queueing lanes such as you get at airports! If I hadn't actually pushed people out of the way, I would never have got out!

 

As much as we wanted to do the Brohltalbahn, we decided on a day of Pacific haulage on the Saarbrücken line. With careful use of local trains we were able to get haulage by all three locos including two full length trips and some shots out on the line. Here are some photos from the day.
