Talyllyn Railway moved to England

The General Manager has just emailed all members to urge them to attend the AGM at the Wharf station this summer and enjoy the English weather! I think we should have been told when the Railway moved from Wales....

Seriously, there's been a long-standing feeling in local communities in North Wales that some of the narrow gauge lines are an anglicizing influence on Welsh-speaking communities. Not even knowing the difference between England and Wales doesn't help allay that feeling and sadly negates some of the good done recently by Talyllyn staff and volunteers attending Welsh-language courses.

C'mon Stuart Williams - check the map!! :)

Oh give the poor man a break! As a volunteer manager myself, I know how easy it can be to cause offence to someone simply because you are struggling to juggle the 1001 tasks you have to do. For example, you accidentally forget to write somebody's name onto a rota sheet - when they discover your error they become slightly haughty and ask, "oh, do you not want me here then?!"

I'm not saying that maintaining good community relations isn't important. I am only saying that Mr. Williams is human; it would be highly surprising if he never made a single mistake; and there are far worse mistakes that he could make than this one!

Stephen Fry would tell you that until quite recently the word English and British were interchangeable.

You are pretty well spot on there. Unless they are a sports fan, most Aussies are probably unaware of the distinction, or even the very existence of a separate country called Wales.

Isn't there a certain irony in someone who lives in the Republic of Ireland complaining that narrow gauge lines are anglicising Welsh-speaking communities?

Agree. You give up saying you are British when you live overseas, as England/English has much greater recognition.

many Jonnie Foreigners don't even know Ireland isn't part of "England" never mind Wales. Come to think of it , some Englanders don't know that either.
