It was clear this would happen from comments made on the Welsh Borders Circular.

http://www.iconsofsteam.com/travel/experience/faq/ - "None of our trips are planned to require a banking engine, therefore you will enjoy the experience of a steam hauled journey without any diesel assistance."

If diesel assistance had not been given for both the outward and return leg it would not have been anywhere near on time.

    Except in extremis, presumably?
Yet as remarked elsewhere, the planned loco, load and route seem to present some inevitability of outcome .

This kind of goes against the perceived logic. Your window hanging gritty haired gricer would prefer the raw effects of a grotty old cheap Mk1, while your 4 course dinner and petit four traveler would prefer the airconned quieter smoother riding Mk2

How frightfully ghastly if the two classes of person got mixed up together.

From my experience of quite a few trips in all 3 classes, that perception re-open widows in Dining is not necessarily accurate.

Not the case at all in my experience. On most trips, plenty of avid steam fans in first and dining who I am sure much appreciated opening toplights.

And as for window hanging, happy memories only now, no matter what class you are in...:)

Surely not, how can you time mileposts, count valve events and slurp soup at the same time

Click watch, scribble time, slurp soup, check valve events every 6th slurp, repeat as required. .

It would appear that Saphos have discovered that promising no assistance is not as easily achieved as they thought. Welcome to the real world.

I wonder if there is a newly invigorated impetus to ready a Class 8 at LSL..

Work on the A2 and King is reportedly well advanced, presumably the A4 having a spare boiler might give it a leg up next?
Maybe a look up the road at MN18 might prompt one of theirs to jump the queue?

Agreed. The big railway (meaning the main line) needs big engines or the VT business model of train loading. Has always been the case.

Given the comparative proliferation of MNs in existence it is perhaps surprising they have not become the core fleet at either 10A or LSL. Two each in traffic plus spares would be mighty useful as a strategic core.

Not practical I don't think, sure their stock in air brake only including the Mk1's. As we know 35018 is vac only.
