The new layout looks great. One small point regards the social media link buttons ..... IMO, functionality is best served by keeping 'Facebook' and 'Twitter' links highly visible at the top of the page, rather than having to scroll down to access them. Just a thought ....

Having taken up membership I note that the receipt splits the fee into fee (sales) and VAT at 20%. Does this mean that the VAT is lost to the Society ?

Good question Fred. Mark Walker, Chairman, will look into it. But his initial reply is: "We still get all the money. He doesn't have to pay vat on his membership, it's more an error on the receipt than anything else"

VAT on membership? Had this argument with HMC&E, as it was then, years ago regarding VAT on subscriptions. They couldn’t even agree amongst themselves but decided finally that it wasn’t applicable in our case.

I also note that no Gift Aid option is available; that would help increase income once arranged. If arranged can back-dated subscription income be entitled and, if so, how far back can the option be applied.

Now that we have at least an estimate of the cost of acquiring and restoring the bogies, and a specific appeal for the cash, I hope this project will gain fresh momentum.

I regret but accept the decision, but just apropos one of those reasons ̶

I believe the original twins were intended, and reckoned in practice, to be roughly equivalent to a Stanier pacific when working together, and individually to Jubilees. A certain Jubilee has hauled several railtours successfully this year over some demanding routes. So the limited power of the recreated 10000 alone would not prevent it from working some main line trains. However that factor in combination with all the others is conclusive.

If it was to go mainline it would be ironic if it had to have a diesel on the back to assist...

    Good News:

Engineer Paul Etherington has managed to obtain a large 10 tonne self supporting lifting beam that comes complete with geared beam trolley, 10 tonne blocks and heavy duty nylon wheels suitable for use on concrete load bearing surfaces.
This will enable the Society to strip down 58022 without the need for any crane, splitting the heads from the engine as well as the alternator. We await discussions with Peak Rail to confirm arrangements going forward.

We have received an email back from the EM2 Loco Society with an asking price of £18,250 for the bogies. They weigh 25 tons each and IDRS may recoup some of the purchase price by weighing in unwanted parts currently attached to the bogies.
The EM2LS is also a charity and their trustees are obliged to realise a suitable price for any assets disposed of.

The price quoted to us is more than we calculate they're worth. We have £6k in the bank.
An Extraordinary general meeting of the charity is to be called so that members might be informed of Trustees' recommendations and then move forward.

Comments about this announcement are of course welcome but please keep it polite and on topic. Trustess are unable to discuss technical options and alternatives on this thread.

Rough guess on what some would say is the scrap value.
    25 x £150 = £3750 per bogie.
That is for heavy pure steel only.
Any wiring or motors included in the bogies?

Money has to be found either to buy these bogies and refurbish them or to build new ones from scratch. At the present asking price for these rusty ones, how would the total costs compare?

£18k for two complete bogies doesn't seem too steep to me.
A good opportunity for some focussed fundraising in the same way that the P2 trust invites people to give specifically for wheels or cylinders maybe?

  19. Didn't 55009 and 55019 cost the DPS £18K each complete and in working order? Although that was 36 years ago... :)
