GWR is by far the worst represented of the big four in terms of surviving Pacifics.

    Just sayin. ;)

I believe a certain Mr. Churchward said of a certain Mr. Gresley, "Why does that young man want to build a Pacific? He could have had ours." ;)

    Fortunately, Gresley had more sense.

And not to mention that Hawksworth has a Pacific class planned, but not built.
    Hence the 80xx “Cathedral” class...

I rather like that Frederick Hawksworth chap, he really had some cracking ideas for the GW. Look at 1501 certainly the most unwestern Western machine I can think of!

Examples of the 82xxx and 84xxx are well on their way though. That only leaves the 77xxx still missing. One day, perhaps...

Oh yes! I had the opportunity to examine 1501 in great detail once: on the A1(M)!! All the traffic had come to a halt after some bonehead in a stolen car made a mess of himself and two police cars near Peterborough once. So I took a walk down the carriageway with my phone and took a few pictures :D

We all have our crosses to bear Ross! ;) Joking aside GW wise I'm rather partial to something with 4 numbers beginning with 78.. They're pretty decent :) image.jpg Getting back on topic how's about building the missing batch of of these?

Erm... Isn't there 8 or 9 of the original 30 currently in preservation? not exactly a missing or under-represented class. Also, I don't think there's enough 43xx's to build new ones from

Out of the 9 left 5 out of those are BR built from new so we don't need to use 5322 or 7325 as a basis for the next batch ! My original comments were meant slightly tongue in cheek.

    Popular myth.
The drawing office seems to have done a bit of preliminary sketching out of ideas for a Pacific on their own account, but when Hawksworth found out he had a stop put to it..

I've sometimes wondered how new was new. About the right number of 43s were withdrawn at the same time...

Really? Now that's quite interesting, would there be any differences between the pre and post war batch's on say the frames maybe?
