no I'd say an underframe is a fairly basic welding job. It's the bodywork that would cost

Recall, Blodge charges labour for the underframe while L&B East don't for the carriage body. Also, the wheels etc are part of the Blodge costs.

You did say that an entire carriage had been quoted at £160,000, which gave me the impression that it was a commercial quote, and also someone else quoted the cost of the underframe at £7000

The £7000 was for an underframe some years ago for an IoM carriage. The post didn't make it clear if this also included wheels, brakes etc etc.

well I assumed it was for the underframe alone. Probably plenty of spare running gear on the IoM

But not at the L&B, ergo the underframe will presumably be a lot more than £7000, unless they can use the wheels that van 23 is currently sitting on?

    Strewth ..... you're brave! :Wideyed:

I thought the Ffesterbahn had exhausted that source a fair while back now. There are ongoing restorations of stock long stored unserviceable (I think it's one of the 'pairs' going through the works this year) and I'd expect most of the former passenger stock now operating in the guise of bogie runners was needed.

There is one thing over on the IoM on bogies not doing what it was s'posed to do. It's green and contentious! ;)

Right ..... I'm out of here before @marshall5 clocks such heretical suggestions!

Brilliant. Can't see the van getting used much, particularly on passenger services, but if the FR decide to repaint Lyd into L&BR livery you could have a very nice and very authentic L&BR heritage train for a gala.

Maybe not, but then again, once the extension is open, there is likely to be goods traffic in the form of passengers' cycles, camping gear, and other outdoor pursuits equipment, so who knows, we may need a Howard van to go with it. Oh wait, we have some parts in stock...

Parts of 2 Howard vans I believe, flat packed and left to rot under a tarpaulin at chelfam until a couple years ago when they finally were moved to Rowley farm, we moved them off the platform a few years back so that the platform edge could be restored, by the look of them at the time they will probably only be any good as patterns

The F.R. bought the 10? complete sets of underframes/bogies/wheels from the old IMR in the 70's that had been the R class runners formed in 1967/8 by removing the bodies from 'Pairs' carriages. The current runners/flats were mostly underframes from 'pairs' and 'large F's' scrapped in the 80's/90's. Over time the newer/better plate frame bogies from the ex pairs runners have been swapped with the diamond framed, wooden bolstered, bogies from 'small F's' and saloons currently in service - if you follow my drift. In the works at the moment are a pair of plate frame bogies rebuilt and converted to rollers at Boston Lodge. A pair of the old (1880's/90's) diamond frame ones are currently being rebuilt 'in house' with new oak bolsters.
The FR built underframes previously referred to were just bare frames - one went under the new F27 (service car for the dining set) and the other is spare. We have sufficient spare bogies from scrapped stock to rotate them for overhaul and convert to roller bearings but new cast wheels have had to be bought in.
Re N0.21 (aka The Cabbage). The overhauled bogies arrived back just before Easter. The body has now been lifted on and re-commissioning work is ongoing with an expected return to traffic shortly.
    Apologies for the thread drift.
    Ray.

I'm fairly certain that somewhere on the website is the figure of £48k. This is for the complete underframe with bogies, brakes and couplings, all ready to roll.

Why would Lyd need to be repainted? When the southern took over the l&b the stock wasn't repainted overnight. Mixed liveries would've been quite common for several years.

Agreed - people these days seem to want (or assume) a homogeneity that clearly wasn’t the case, as if there were rigid demarcation lines between eras and types of rolling stock

I’m sure somewhere I’ve got a photo from 1930 showing a L&B wagon clearly still showing that livery, seven years after the grouping.

I don't entirely disagree, but it would be nice to see Lyd, Lyn or Yeo2 in L&BR Livery at some point, hauling a train of L&BR Liveried stock including the Van on the L&BR.

Also, it wasn't a clean cut between L&BR Brown and Cream, and Southern Green - some of the coaches were painted Plain Brown during the last years of the independent companies existence.

Still, I we can be thankful that we can see a L&BR train on the orginal trackbed in the first place - twenty years ago it would have been a mad thought!

I would have thought that painting Lyd in L&BR livery would be decreasing her authenticity, as she is a replica of the SR-era built Lew.

Pity that trains won't be going past it for quite a while yet.

Well you never know what might happen, the plan is to lay some track in front of the halt but there is enough rail to go quite a bit further, one of those pedal carts or a pump truck would be good but then again I do believe some members of EA have something to do with a steam loco
