Just passed the Slough cams, still 1 minute down.

I shall be at Minehead this afternoon to welcome the train.

At Newbury 7 late. Bit of chaos at Reading. The Paignton was 13 down and had a knock on effect on services down the B&H. Clan Line left 8 down in its path behind the now late running Newbury service.

Blimey, they ripped up the track between Castle Cary and Cogload, according to RTT thats about 22 miles in 18 minutes. Thats an over 70mph average.

The story so far. We flew over Savernake at 64 but were stopped at Woodborough for a reported trespass. Rather quick thereafter!

Ran from the signal at Blatchbridge Junction to Taunton in inside even time. 59.5 at Brewham from 0 at Blatchbridge. Brilliant. Load 11.

I will report the rest without comment. (You will see why). When I watched Clan Line leave BL for Minehead a diesel had been added at the back. It is claimed that it was mentioned as a possibility by WSR operations at the planning stage but it seems to have come as a surprise to the loco owners and UKRT. This to do with when Flying Scotsman got stuck.

I assume that a judgement was made after a risk assessment. (I gather that there is drizzle further along the line.) So I am currently waiting for the next steam train to Minehead. And by the way, the Manor that I was hoping to have a ride behind today is not running after being on all week.

Now there's something for you all to chew over......

WSR are legendary in their risk aversion. It’s all to do with they think there are hills on their railway.

As for Flying Scotsman vs Clan Line?
A3s are ok, but MNs are mental.

  7. You were there, @Big Al - I reckon the Driver of Clan Line did well with all the slipping out of Lydeard and it must have been comforting to know there was something at the back to help. There is also the little matter of timekeeping and a few hundred people - those on the charter and on the service trains - to keep happy.

  8. As for "hills", there are quite a few...see http://www.wsr.org.uk/r-gradients.htm and there are quite a few bendy bits too. Not the steepest heritage railway, no-one said it was, but enough to tax the best driver. Come and have a go... :)

Shame the sun only started to break through after she passed by. Clan Line at Crofton on the climb to Savernake.

I was out the window immediately after the support coach Clan line took the banks carefully but didn't struggle couldn't see the 33 so didn't know if it pushed but Clan line seemed to be in control and sounded magnificent!!

Well the run with the Hall was pleasant enough. I guess that I'll have to accept that the WSR experts reckon that a Class 8 with only 11 on would have struggled on their line. Would have been nice to have been told before I booked.

And judging by the configuration that greeted me at Minehead it looks as though it will happen all over again on the way back.

Agree but what do you expect when three more coaches are tacked on the back for a climb out of BL of 1 in 101. It's called a self fulfilling prophesy. I recognise it's trickier later on though.

By the way, did you notice how well the DBC crew handled the steeper 1 in 85 up to BL?

I seem to remember 35005 slipping to a stand on Wahford bank (with I suspect a much lighter load) at a WSR Steam Gala some years ago and having to be rescued by 9351.

There was no box on the back (at Crofton) and the Light Engine move that followed down the line was EWS livered 67016

Well you said it yourself, it is their railway so to run on it will be what they think is appropriate without screwing their whole timetable for their own passengers (especially on a Bank Holiday).
In the past many inbound tours were double headed, Tangmere and the 7F spring to mind, I suspect these days there are not enough locos available plus do not know how vac only locos work with the stock used and Clan Line.

Passing through Washford after being pushed up a relatively short 1 in 65 as had to happen. Have given up on the WSR. Yes Clan Line has visited Minehead but not in the manner that I had hoped for and not through any fault of the loco either.

The current run back to BL is dire to put it politely.

I've been on a couple of WSSEs where a WSR loco took over at BL to run to Minehead without a box being put on the back. Odd move to shove it on the back of Clan Line.

I recall in 2010 Western Enterprise brought a train (10 or 11 coaches) from Paddington into BL. 6024 was put on the front and took the complete consist to MH with no assist from the Western. The pair brought the train back to BL from where 6024 then took the train forward to Paddington.

It would appear that Clanline (and the DBC crew) has started its 'Holiday in the West' in fine form.
