Will the existing set of frames for 'Project Yeo' be of utility, or have design lessons learned from "Lyd" (or sommat else along the way) rendered them redundant?

I've no idea as to whether the existing frames will be suitable for incorporating into the loco. And yes, my understanding is that the first L&BR MW will be based upon LYD's design specification.

    Cheers Chris. :)

"Based' on 'Lyd's' design", Eh? I wonder whether the (allegedly?) uneven axle loads of the MW design will be approached in the same manner adopted for 'Lyn'*?

*If 'yes', how soon does a renewed lead (the metal) appeal kick off? :)

I cannot see the MW project kicking off in the near future by reason that the railway will wish to first satisfactorily resolve the issues related to LYN. And then almost certainly before the manufacturing process can begin for the high cost MW project, it will first be necessary to raise the all important money to pay for the work.

As I understand it, the building of the first Manning-Wardles, along with the required additional carriage stock, will be co-ordinated with the completion of the current extension to Wistlandpound.

surely the first built mw for the l&b will be in l&b livery so that it matches the l&b liveried carriages

So, Andrew, if you actually joined the L&B you'd have some input into that decision ;)

yes that is correct, but why have original liveried carriages,a loco in southern livery (lyn) and the next also in southern so in effect an authentic train cannot be put together?
as for not being a member,i think i explained myself once already,i was a member and would have continued to do so if it were not for the arrogance of a trust director a few years ago who a.couldn't see that not informing other parties of what he was doing was a problem and b.when being told that seeing he was in charge of the planning it actually was his responsibility to inform others of his actions ,he actually turned around and tried to blame a trustee,at least i know the £30 i save on l&b membership (and more besides may i add from my own pocket) will be spent sensibly on something in the southern half, myself and the other couple of volunteers for EA ask for nothing towards the costs of petrol/consumables that we use in the upkeep of trackbed in our care, ohh and as a footnote, even if i was a member,my input wouldn't amount to much,if you have not noticed already, what chairman smiles wants, chairman smiles gets

did members of the l&b have any input into lyn's livery or was that down to members of the 762 club or even just the chosen few,if the mw's are built privately funded like lyn, will it be much the same,if they are built with monies raised for the extension project, which i think rolling stock is covered by,will members actually even get a say

Not just a livery debate, but a "who decides what" debate as well - add a burger to the popcorn order:)

It's been said many times on here before; the rolling stock was not repainted overnight and therefore mixed L&B / Southern liveries is authentic.

Yes that's true but you have that with Lyn and to an extent lyd also, surely the next l&b loco should be original l&b colours and after carriage 5 the next 5 should be in southern green, have toilet and refreshment facilities and be corridor connected, after all the southern was a pioneering group

Seems that fretting about the colour of an as yet unconstructed locomotive is a tad premature, even by NP standards. At what point in the construction do you have to actually make a decision - I suspect at the earliest, when you have assembled frames, if the inside frame colour varied depending on the final choice.

In any case, it’s hardly a pressing decision, nor a final one that, once chosen, can never be altered. Locos get repainted all the time - how many significantly different liveries has “Tornado” had within the space of ten years? At least three, plus an initial incarnation in works grey.

I don't think it's 'fretting , it's just general banter as far as I know the mw's had 3 liveries and it would be nice to see one in a private l&b livery

I am sure you are correct in all you say, and I'm certainly not going to argue against someone who has been at the sharp end of the L&B for so long. I personally think that those who are actually on the ground making things happen deserve more of a vote than the chequebook supporters, but a big cheque is hard to argue against.

If I had a say in the colour Lyn was painted, I'd have gone for Southern green with stovepipe chimney. I just always thought she looked better post 1929. The cap stack that Baldwin's provided is a style, that to my eyes, has always looked a bit dodgy on every locomotive that ever wore one.

I agree with you though that the next Manning-Wardle ought to be in L&BR livery, as authentic to 1898 as can be managed, but I hope that authentic turns out darker than the miniature 7 ¼” locomotive that I have seen.

I rather suspect that the M-W's will, to many, look better in Southern colours too. We'll have to wait and see. Unless someone wants to write a very big cheque, in which case they might get to choose

Are there any published photos that prove this? I've not seen any that show a large lettered southern livery (on either Lyn or a MW) with the old L&B two colour carriage livery. The large lettered SR livery doesn't seem to have been applied to the locos for some years after take over.
Conversely, there is a photo of Lyn in "Branch Line to Lynton" with the stovepipe chimney. This is prior to going to Eastleigh, where the large lettered Southern livery was applied. In the photo the nameplates are in the centre of the tanks and the Baldwin works plates are on the cab sides. Possibly still in independent L&B Holly Green? The caption states that the stovepipe chimney was fitted prior to 1923 and the SR Eastleigh livery applied in 1928.
The photo is undated but the carriages are in a single colour - either Southern green or possibly a later all over L&B brown?

Catchpole, p55 pp3"Lyn retained a copper-topped chimney until January 1927, when it returned from Eastleigh adorned with a "stove-pipe" chimney, giving it a distinctive appearance. Fortunately, none of the other locomotives was sent to Eastleigh, although their boilers were repaired there."

There is a photo of Lyn being craned off an SG wagon after delivery from Eastleigh in Branch Line to Lynton, dated January 1929 (plate 24). It is in the new SR livery and has the stovepipe.
However, there are three photos of Lyn in the same book (plates 5,6 and 90) showing Lyn with the stovepipe and pre-Eastleigh livery and the caption for plate 6 says that the stovepipe was fitted before 1923. It appears that Catchpole is incorrect?
