I don't think there's any question of Coppernob ever being returned to steam. However the NRM did allow her to visit the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway for static display about 20 years ago, so potentially they might be prepared to do that again.

Wasn’t it Coppernob that visited Dresden museum a few years ago.

Sorry to burst your balloon but the wheels on FR20 are also not original and where replaced during its time at the steelworks - they are however the same dia as the original ones. You can see this if you look at the older photos of FR20, the original wheels have spokes which are much more 'oval' in section however a close look at the later photos these show a more 'square' section and it is these it now retains.

As for the amount of original Sharp Stewart bits remaining, there are not many on 20 (&25) but there are also some other bits apart from the wheels that date from the steelworks rebuilds like all the horn guides (and these are big hefty castings unlike the original ones seen on the drawings and other more original SS locos) oh and the steam brake assy.

So as for the expense side of a possible restoration using new larger wheels on FR25 there is very little in it although with so much having being replaced with new stuff on FR20 you may as well just build a 100% replica.

I believe so, hasn't it (like the Royal Family) got family from Germany? I do think @Johnme101 is maybe confusing a cosmetic restoration with a full blown restoration to working order of Coppernob, however in a few years time what price a line up of all 3 Furness loco's somewhere? What a story that that could tell.

All 4 would be even better... (yes I'm thinking of No.115.)
Sadly I doubt even a large Euromillions win would be enough for that one.

Surely "Coppernob" is too important to play around with?

Now "Lyn" is a reality, the requisite expertise with bar frames has been proven and as new builds go, a repro to acceptable standards would come in cheaper than most of the suggestions made by several folk ..... me included.

So, who's shelling out then? .... coz my €uromillions win is already earmarked for a couple of personal YIWBN's which probably won't stretch past a Brighton K and early NLR 4-4-0T* to even the Highland/Caley "River" I'd so dearly love to see.

*partly as I'm probably of the very few who finds this workaday mid-Victorian design attractive, partly 'coz there just aren't enough locos with the word 'Slaughter' on their works plates! :)

Now you mention it, haven't we got a thread or two for that?

I woz just sayin' why I won't be funding a repro 'nob ..... what with my existing shopping list. Well, that and the fact Camelot so consistently keep getting the ■■■■■■■ numbers wrong!

I have added a few new Furness Rly photos to my site and put them all into two new albums.

Photos of the three Furness locos (Coppernob, 20 & 25) since 1973 along with Tern, the only surviving FR wagon and assorted relics are here:

Photos of the non-Furness activities of the Furness Railway Trust are here :

The last time I saw Copperknob it still had visible damage from when it was bombed. Let us please leave something alone or we'll have nothing left that actually records the construction techniques of the 19th century. There is a reason to have museum stock as well as running stock.

Agreed - and it’s good to see some exhibits showing a patina of age and wear too. It’s not necessary to restore everything to ‘original’ condition or ‘exhibition’ finish.
