It's a pathing stop to allow the Newquay-Pad through on the main.

And a post on a Facebook page suggests so too. Not sure if this one is an “Official” MNLPS page though.

Westbury - Taunton 44m 09s. Inside even time. Easy up to Brewham cleared at 50 and Somerton cleared at 70. Nice running in mid - high seventies.

Just noticed the progress of the Torbay Express today to the water stop at Taunton.

For some operational reason, it seems, the train left Bristol 36 minutes late. It has just arrived at Taunton only 6 minutes late having regained half an hour on the booked time. (That's over a total distance of 75 miles). There's a pretty good chance that the water stop will be undertaken in the remaining time so the train should be ready to leave on time at 1040. Well done to all involved in that.

How was this done? Well the time wasn't regained through station stops. It was the running between the stations that made the difference and as far as I can make out it was within the gaps available around other services. The significant gain was the 47 miles from Westbury to Taunton that was run in about 44 minutes - i.e. inside even time. This is almost exactly the same performance as Clan Line produced last week between Frome and Taunton on the Quantock Intruder.

There is a lot of fuss made about the lack of paths on the network. This Torbay Express is almost a regular service in the summer and I would have thought that by now there was evidence to suggest that the path out to Taunton is slack. I understand the point of giving steam charters plenty of time to travel from A to B but is that really in the best interests of everyone? It doesn't need two hours to get to Taunton via Westbury. Everyone had to be at Bristol today (on a Sunday) half an hour earlier than they could have been asked to arrive. The loco would have been running with a hot fire rather than drifting along trying to avoid early running etc etc.

Come on Network Rail. Sort out some reasonable paths that are achievable without over challenging the loco or the crews. Everyone benefits.

Last week Clan Line ran over Brewham at 59.5 (starting out of Blatchbridge Signal!) and topped Somerton at 71. Load was 11 then rather than 12 today.

But what a performance. Look at the YouTube clip of her taking the train away today from Westbury as if she were a HST. Brilliant. Tornado? - Eat your heart out. ;)

Yes what an engine! Agree about a faster path but only if a class 7 or 8 and of course Clan Line is exceptional

Over Goodrington bank in fine style, decent exhaust given how humid it is. Tonight’s climb of Whiteball ought to be rather special given how vocal 35028 has been today.

    Snipped....
The reason went like this- "TVSC Bristol TM Signaller advised that 1Z27 would be a very late start due to the fact the steam loco had to under take more run round and shunting moves than previously requi red. The train is booked to be formed of 11 coaches and always st ables on the Up Through Sidings, but since the signalling sy stem has been transferred to Axle Counters the train is foul of the Axle Counter heads. This has resulted in the train having to be stabled on the Down Through Line, and extra shunts required to get the train to the correct formation. The train departed Bristol TM 37 late as a result. ON ADVICE FROM WEST COUNTRY INCIDENT CONTROLLER CODED IZ/IQA B AS A RESULT OF BRISTOL TM RESIGNALLING".

A new saying has developed since Easter among staff at Temple Meads that goes "YOU'VE BEEN BASRE'd". There are major flaws in the new signalling procedures that only come to light when it all starts to go wrong. I'm no longer on WNXX but I'm sure any one who logs in over there will find reports of same.

Away from TAU 1 early. 59 through Wellington but not unduly pressed on Whiteball, est 40 min. Compates with 60/44 on load 12 last year.
Nice run down to Exeter but checked by late Exmouth - Paington unit which also delayed the hst that overtook us during Taunton water stop. Few minutes late into Kingswear.

No sign of the airshow, but impressive formation flying by a small squadron of ducks.

So was this the DBC crew with a P&DSR pilotman or a P&DSR crew? Did seem to be going well regardless of who it was.
