    As a quick aside.
Does St Dunstans have a Yorkshire connection?
As there is a location in the Bradford area called St Dunstans.

Or is there another another reason for the name.

A quick Google search reveals this site. The charity was renamed from St Dunstans.

Dunstan (a celebrated Archbishop of Canterbury, died aged around 79-80 yrs old in 988) was a big deal in medieval England, when pilgrimages were seriously big business. Quite where else in England might have genuine connections, I don't know, but his popularity probably has something to do with being significant to goldsmiths, silversmiths, blacksmiths, locksmiths and .... wait for it .... bell ringers!

He got a bit eclipsed by Thomas Beckett in the 'Name a Primate' stakes and after the reformation, slipped into relative obscurity.

Here endeth the lesson. I need a cuppa.

Dunstan seems to have been a force for good. Somerset born, became a monk, later Abbot of Glastonbury, then Bishop of Worcester and then London, finally to Canterbury. Like all senior clerics in history he fell foul of one English monarch having ticked of said monarch for a living a questionable lifestyle.

Glad to see that attitude; I recently had an unpleasant experience with someone when I pointed out an (major) error. Socrates would have told them there's no profit in being wrong... :-(

  17. An impressively eclectic selection of real ales is to be offered at the Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust's premises, Washford station this weekend. All 18 beers are sourced from smaller breweries located within an approximate 50 mile radius (Devon, Somerset, Bath & Bristol). To compliment the Washford offer, Quantock Brewery of Bishops Lydeard will have their regular gala bar set up on Minehead station platform, and their splendid brewery tap room adjacent to Bishops Lydeard station will also be open during the gala event.

The WSR mini beer festival is not a CAMRA event, although beer selection and sourcing was entrusted to Somerset CAMRA's branch chairman. Mick (a former loco dept volunteer) has done a fine job. I've yet to sample beers from a couple of the newer breweries due to be represented. That'll be put right this weekend!

The beer list now appears on wsr.org.uk news page (where else). One or two of the beer names remain to be confirmed, although the published brewery list is complete and accurate.

Incidentally, Somerset CAMRA's Real Ale Festival returns to Minehead on 7th & 8th September. The venue will be Minehead Rugby Club. Not on the station platform this time, but at least it will be possible to again use the WSR to travel to and from the festival. Somerset CAMRA intend to lay on transport from the railway station to the rugby club. More details nearer the time.

    Cheers 'n' Beers,

    Barrie
