I thoroughly enjoyed watching the programme. It was a nice change to have a railway restoration story that wasn't about a steam locomotive. As is always the case with such programmes, the programme makers had one hour (less advert time) to document a six month project and it was clear that a great deal wasn't shown, but I felt that what was shown gave a good overview of the restoration work.

 

I enjoyed episode 1.

I very much look forward to the IOWSR restoration next Wednesday. And I hope the publicity does the IOWSR a great deal of good.

I thought it was great.

Obviously it had to have mass appeal with silly deadlines and "This is a SERIOUS set back" stuff, but it did a wonderful job demonstrating the hard work going on on preserved lines, work that gets outshone by locos far too frequently. It was more "detailed" than I was expecting and will hopefully inspire a few new volunteers to get stuck in.

 

I'm also really looking forward to our programme next week even though saw quite a bit of the filming and was on camera a few times myself as well. Knowing some of what was done they should be able to tell the complete story of No.10. Not seen any of the of the cuts so don't know what's actually in the programme.

Really hoping to be in C&W next Thursday when I assume No.10 will be unveiled for the public to see.

 

I think next week's programme is the one I'm going to enjoy the most.

I did worry that the series might give the impression that carriage restoration was quick and cheap but I don't think it will from seeing the first episode.

Such cantrail rot is not uncommon in carriages of this kind and I've done several such repairs myself. It of interest Bob what timber was the original cantrail?
Generally if the cantrail is softwood I'll replace it with softwood (treated of course). The cantrails on ECJS 189 are softwood and unusually they are in one piece the length of the vehicle and luckily only needed a bit of patching. On Thompson CK 18477 a third of the corridor side cantrail was rotten, which had meranti cantrails, which i was able to replace with treated sapele in one piece while the side was out.
However normally I replace the rail in two parts as above, I'm curious as to how you got the new rail in.

The new sections of cantrail were laminated from two pieces of timber to enable them to be fixed without having to jack up the roof. The originals were softwood.

Not sure whether the embargo is lifted after the vehicle is featured, or lasts until the end of the series.

To be fair Paul both of us have posted little hints about how big the rebuild was! Although Steam Railway did give the game away about a year or so ago!

 

It has been quite a frustrating time. I contribute to the C&W Facebook page and have had to constantly review my photos in case the Oldbury was in the background or if any components were amongst others that were the main subject. Ours is a very compact workshop with public access and as the Oldbury is still being worked on it is behind screens. If we are asked what is behind the screen we have had to lie, not something that I am comfortable with at all.

 

Heard various dates when lifted, from after each programme broadcast to end of series and even way after end of series!!!

My photos are just about ready to be published, just need to add more words, once given clearance by PV. Unfortunately mine more or less stop in Sept as we were away on holidays which were booked a long time before the programme even started planning.

 

I can't understand any logic in extending the embargo Beyond the airing of the TV programme. After all, everyone will have had the chance to see the carriage up close in HD by then, so some random date beyond that doesn't make sense, particularly when there will be visitors travelling to the railway, wanting to see the carriage in the timber (including myself here).
I'm guessing that the carriage will become part of Train Story for the foreseeable future?

 

It's certainly hoped to run it occasionally with the 4 wheel set, but when not I guess yes safe in Train Story. Might even consider booking a day in its 1st with our family.

Was it me or did any one else notice the other 3 coaches in the background when this weeks coach was rolled out of Pentre Fellin?
