    Anthony,

I asked the DPS marketing crew this morning and they told me that she won't carry the headboard at all this weekend.

    Oh,
okay thanks. That’s shame as it was quoted as it would by the gala planning team. Would’ve been nice to see, even if they just used it when Deltic was hauling the Quantock belle.

I like the wheel. Is that for level crossing? Is there anywhere else that has one like it in signal boxes in uk?

Wansford signal box on NVR has one, although not as integrated with the frame. Had a go once - needs a fair amount of effort to shift the gates!

No, the signal box doubles as a windmill and the wheel turns the box around so the sails are pointed directly into the wind.

    ;)

Grosmont Crossing and New Bridge SBs on the NYMR and nearby Kirkham Abbey and Weaverthorpe boxes on the York - Scarborough line. Not that rare but obviously declining on the main network.

I didn’t notice any sails on my last visit, they must be away for repair. What does the windmill power?

I believe it pumps up the hydraulic assistance system which works the facing point locks and the signalman's Jacuzzi.

Bronwydd Arms box has one - Not connected to the gates anymore as we have gone back to the 1800's design of two large gates instead of the four smaller ones which are too heavy to handle. There is also no visibility in the box of the road approach from the North so SOP says the gates must be manually operated so the operator can check for traffic.

Used to tell the little 'uns who visited the box it was used for the signalmen to play pirates when no trains were coming - and when they didn't believe us we admitted that, because we have so much rain in Wales, it was actually used to steer the signal box during any floods... :)
