Carriage and Wagon Restoration is a very under appreciated aspect of our hobby, much lauded as certain loco restorations are, what do we (or the general public) spend most of our time in ? Anything that shows how hard it is to get these things rolling again can only be a good thing.

It worked for my 12 year old son, prompting some good questions and keeping his interest throughout. As others have said, not for the experts among us, but a useful introduction to the subject.

It wouldn't be, it still has the third class compartments in.

Yes I’d agree it is under appreciated. It was the fact it was carriage restoration that caught Sarah’s attention and interest, it certainly made a nice change from the usual topics covered when a railway program is made for Joe Public, giving exposure to an area of preservation that doesn’t always get it.

It only had the compartments in because we put them back. I was referring to earlier than this.

One thing has occurred to me as a point in general and not just limited to this programme; has anyone ever undertaken a thorough risk assessment with regards to potential hazards likely to be encountered in vehicle restoration, other than asbestos? For example, I'm thinking
    • Hardwood/softwood fibres, dusts and splinters
    • Decomposition products of paints when heated
    • Types of paints, e.g those with lead-bearing pigments
    • Metal plating, most obvious being cadmium - filed, cut or welded
    • Asbestos-insulated wiring
That's just a few off the top of my head.

    Thoughts?

Just watched the IOW coach, and wow!! that is one very nice vehicle, the varnished wood looks so different to the Southern Green, It's very interesting that the laminated wood chassis is a flat packed so hopefully the drawings made for it will be of use when the time comes to do the next Oldbury its noticeable how much smaller the coach is when compared to the other 4 wheelers.

Well, that was a lot better.
The quality of restoration was apparent.
Obviously, the coach was not finished, but we got the feel of the thing.
However, toward the end, PS said it was the only Victorian coach in existence?????

The coach that was to the right of the Oldbury in the train in the final scenes is NLR 6336 and is also of the same age 1864!

Incidentally the lady that was featured mentioned her father, he was the actor Richard Vernon he will be remembered by those familiar with The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Yes, I was a bit puzzled by that especially as he was shown riding in a train comprised of nothing else! He did in fact say "Victorian wooden coach". Still not true. However are we not being a bit nit picky about a programme which gives due credit to a high grade job done against a stiff timetable,

That really is an extremely impressive piece of work, and featuring the lady whose summerhouse it was, was a very nice touch- it gave a degree of continuity to the project, but so many unanswered questions:
    1) how much did that fabulous underframe cost?
    2) where was the running gear sourced from?
    3) at what point will brake gear be fitted?
    4) how different is the ride quality compared to a standard cut-down CCT underframe?
    5) how will the carriage be lit without Dynamo or battery boxes?

    it's over to you, Gary!

Were both of the 3rd compartments finished? I would think that the new chassis has the fitting plates already there to fit the air brake cylinder? and the timescale did not allow for the brakes to be fitted

IIRC he also said that it would be the only running wooden underframed carriage. All the small F's on the Isle of Man Railway are running on their {mostly} original wooden underframes. The programme was well worth watching though. Looking forward to the next episode.

Just caught-up with the IOW episode. Wow - that coach looks fantastic! Huge congratulations to all involved! Really looking forward to riding in the finished vehicle now - is it likely to be in regular service by this summer?

Is it just another five Oldburys to restore now...? :)

    Well here goes

    1) I do not know :) I was only involved with the overhaul of the original door locks. Any one notice that the door handle is on the left of the door rather than the more normal right hand side? We didn't just get one underframe kit :)
    2) The only second hand bits were the wheelsets, the drawhooks and the buffer heads. Everything else is new :- all springs, axleboxes, buffer castings etc.
    3) It is currently in the middle of the brake fit out, we have even made a new air brake cylinder for it.
    4) I have never ridden in it but the road springs are the correct extra long softer type, so it shouldn't be too bad
    5) None of our coaches has working lighting, given time it will be electric.
