Unless I am mistaken as soon as brakes are applied on the lead loco, the diesel automatically powers down. Thus radio contact is not needed.

I guesss the assisting locos driver watches the brake gauges and reacts to those or is it automatic?? The diesel was still pushing during the slipping and only stopped when the Black 5 driver controlled slip and applied full brakes so maybe.

Might be a topic better not debated on a public forum?

Doesn't often work out that way. I would like to think that if you are a steam enthusiast, your passion is such that anything that gets in its way can be referred to anything you like such as a BOX for a diesel. If you are a staunch diesel fan, you will hate the sights and sounds of steam and happy to refer to them as kettles. Sorry mate, but sitting between 2 stones must be a sterile world. Just like Plymouth and Exeter, Celtic and Rangers, Spurs and Arsenal, you can beat bitter rivalry!!

Disagree. The forum is there to discuss these incidents. Many will have been concerned, as I was, with the uncontrolled slipping which thankfully, did not cause damage to the Black 5. Surely how and why it happened should be available for all.

    Thanks.

It's just north of Wellington station site. Unfortunately will soon be ruined by new housing development.

Thanks. The 47 appears to be doing very little which confirms my view as to where it cut in.

Sounded like it was doing little other than taking it's own weight when it passed me.

So, out of interest, how long did it take to get to Wellington Don? mp171 1/4 will do, and what was the passing speed? We put a lot of info out on the Torbays, warts and all, but on last weekends trains, nothing, which is disappointing with the claims that are being made.

Wellington was 11/26 at 46.0, MP 171 was 12/29 at 49.1, Beam Bridge was 13/49 at 43.6. I think this would be possible with the train weight of 395 tons bearing in mind how hard the engine was working and with the safety valves feathering so it looks like the DL was just taking its own weight until just after Wellington but pushed from there to the top though not that hard.

Thanks for the info Don. Interesting. Will dig out 45407's logs and compare as both times she was being worked hard with 8 up so would expect her speeds to be a few mph higher.

Apologies for not acknowledging the much more detailed earlier post.

First time around I missed detailed timings Don produced. Sorry about that. Have put them in a table with 45407 + 8 with around 300 tons on the Royal Duchys in 2014, with Ray Churchill on the regulator both times.

So far I've only found one 10 coach run westbound over Whiteball. With the claims on this thread that 45212 is a Class 6/7, it's appropriate that it is a Torbay Express with 5029 Nunney Castle, which, due to only having a 2 row superheater boiler, is usually referred to as a Class 6/7.

Can't get the table to drop in here so have had to add as a pdf.

It's always the same with diesels on the back: Impossible to gauge what they are doing. The 'taking their own weight' setting doesn't exist. We can only speculate what the 5 would have done with 10 up unassisted. Not impossible to have hit the times and speeds from the 9th to mp171 and Beam Bridge, but that was all before the 1in 90; 1in86 and 1in80 where the bank really bites.

To my mind the diesel was assisting, probably on the ubiquitous notch 1, from Taunton to get the 515 ton train to Silk Mill Crossing in under 4 minutes but I wasn't there.

We went down to Paignton on the 7th and rode behind L94 and 7 (only one converted DMU coach). The little one held 18 up Churston Bank from a standing start at Goodrington. Doubt the 5 with 10 up would have any problem with the climb. 4-6-0s rarely do.

Did we ever find out why the 47 was there as the train was timed for 60 max?

That's great . Can I use this in my Column? The train was top and tail 47s to BTM due to reversals at Gfd and Westbury. The TM told me that the DL was there for the climb on the Torbay Steam Railway but inevitably it would have to help elsewhere as we were late.

'course. I've got virtually all the quarters on all three runs if you'd like me to add them to the table. You can add the rest of your details of the 9th to show the train's progress/comparisons as the grades change. Might not be able to finish it until Monday as doing both the CV and CE this weekend.
