Footbridge - Suggestions for new home

Hullo everyone

Plumstead station in SE London is largely as built in 1859 and boasts a splendid footbridge dating from 1894. There's online history and photos here...

Network Rail intend to remove the footbridge and instal lifts etc. This will sadly ruin the station's atmosphere but there is local interest in seeing the footbridge preserved. The problem is that it only has one set of stairs.

If anyone can think of a re-use, please say so. If anything viable is suggested a local Councillor may be prepared to take the matter up with NR.

Somewhere like Holt on the North Norfolk needs a footbridge, there's a plan to put one in don't know if they have one though, might be worth getting in touch with them and asking?

 

One at Harmans Cross would be useful

Rushcliffe Halt on the GCRN? The long-gone original had stairs to the Up platform and ended at the top of the bank on the Down side.

I guess it would depend on the length.

Even with one flight of stairs I could be useful, in fact its just like the ex Cowes IOW footbridge now at Medstead and Four Marks on the Mid Hants. That footbridge was rebuilt using 2 new brick piers and new stairs.

Was Cowes the last place where gravity shunting (right up to closure) was routinely used by passenger stock? It's a "then" where local knowledge would certainly be needed if you'd only got the "now" shot.

 

Wellington ( Salop) had the Much Wenlock branch train gravity shunted...

 

Would that be later than Cowes (closed 21 Feb 1966)? I thought the line between Much Wenlock and Craven Arms went in the early 50's?

 

Much Wenlock to Craven Arms 1951, Wellington to Much Wenlock 1962 (63 for goods ) - ref Steam Days Feb 2003. Part of the line remained open to Buildwas Power station albeit from Madeley Jct not Wellington but is now mothballed since closure of the Power station.

Thread drift perhaps but I think of two in scotland where the branch trains were gravity shunted , Killin and Banff. Any more we need a new thread.

I witnessed gravity shunting on the Slovene-Croatian border about a month ago. Slovene loco pulled the train in. Dropped the pantograph, the Croatian loco came down, pulled the Slovene loco to the end on the loop, then pushed it down the loop where it ran past us (with pantograph still down). The Croatian loco then backed back down and waited to take us on our way. The Slovene loco waited in the loop, put up the pantograph and went back over the border.

It was an interesting shunting operation to witness.
