A lovely 1930s period train running on a very 21st century piece of railway. A ganger of the '30s would turn in his grave at the sight of such weed covered permanent way.
And why is Bittern carrying an emergency coupling on its front draw hook?

Maybe because it's going to have to return Tender First in another 13 or so miles time?! What about the Air pipes too?

But why the emergency coupling when its own screw coupling can be seen in its correct position?

Evidently gwalkeriow is interested. If you're not, OK, but why post only to challenge his interest?

It’s an interesting operational question, since the loco appears to have its own coupling for the reverse working, but the presence of the emergency coupling would - unless moved - preclude its use.

Thee's a reason for everything but the apparent reason for this somewhat defeats me. Perhaps the fireman didn't know that there is a dedicated hook on the tender to hang it from?

6989 looking very smart now by the look of some of the latest images from the web site.
    http://www.wightwick-hall-6989.com/id3.html

An ex-Worcester Shed loco for a time, Wightwick Hall was pressed into service on the Cornishman, in March 1957, filling in for a failed castle. So it would be very fitting to see it at Toddington alongside 7903 one day soon. Just saying. :)

I'm trying to work out where the single line section of the ECML is :)

Looks really good. It is really nice to see long term projects come to fruition.

(Just out of interest - how many ex-Worcester engines are preserved)

The GWS now only have two operational locos plus the railmotor having put a a lot of money and effort into new builds. I'm not sure how far down the overhaul queue this one is but it would be an ideal engine to generate money by hiring out to heritage railways

Well, there's this one, of course ;) http://www.preservation.kesr.org.uk/steam-locomotives/no-19

More generally, there are examples of 2-6-0 tender engines from each of the big four, plus BR. Currently operational I believe there are:
    • Maunsell U class 31806
    • Peppercorn K1 62005
    • Ivatt class 2MT 44647, 46512, 46521
    • Ivatt class 4MT 43106
    • BR Standard 2MT 78018 and 78022
    • BR Standard 4MT 76017, 76079, 76084
Non operational, you have 3 other Maunsell U class plus an N class; a Peppercorn K4; two (maybe three....) Hughes / Fowler Crabs; a Stanier 2-6-0; various other Ivatts and BR Standards; two GWR 2-6-0s, plus the WSR conversion.

Seem to remember it's operational stint was cut short by firebox problems?

Hopefully the Stanier 2-6-0 will be out again in the foreseeable future; its overhaul is certainly progressing steadily.
