I’m trying to clear up some details about the tender with 34067 Tangmere. The loco was purchased from Barry with a Bulleid 5100 gallon tender no. 3130.

A note in Mid Hants News in Spring 1990 says “The tender tank has been exchanged for a kit of parts to make a new 5250 gallon tender and the old tank is going to Loughborough to match up with 35005”

The Mid Hants News for Spring 1991 says that the tank had been delivered to the railway from Plenty Ltd, Newbury

The loco and tender went to Bury in 1996 and I have no further information.

Looking at recent photos of 34067’s tender it appears to be a 5500 gallon design, albeit with an extended coal bunker

    So the questions are:

    1. Does the current tender have the chassis of tender 3130

    2. Was the new tank from Plenty Ltd always a 5500 gallon tank and was it built with an extended bunker or was this added later

    3. Did the 5100 gallon tank from tender 3130 really go to Loughborough, and if so what happened to it? The tender with 35005 at that stage number 3119 (which today is with 34039 having been used with several Bulleids in preservation) has what I believe is a new build tank based on the Bulleid 6000 gallon design.

Hmm. I do recall that 34039 & 35005 officially swapped tenders at the GCR but the ex-34039 tender was in one piece having left Barry with the loco. I can’t remember if the ex-35005 tender was ever a kit of parts as you suggest; possibly. Another contender is the tank belonging to 35025 (presumably still with it) and I also can’t recall what tender 34101 had. But all four were on the GCR at the same time so those are the places to start looking.

I have an inkling that the Plenty tank wasn't used as it had problems. It was a long time ago though

I think the tender tank from Plenty was used on the chassis of what was 35025`s original tender, which is now paired with 34105 at the MHR.
34105 ran for the large part of its first restoration with this tender, having earlier been coupled with the tender that is currently paired to 35018 nowadays.
The old tender body was removed and sent to the GCR for reuse with 35025 and I believe is now with the said loco at Sellindge, following that locos eviction from the Great Central. Visible in the background of this photo. https://farm6.static.flickr.com/5221/5772034775_9ef8acc963_b.jpg
During 34105`s current overhaul, the Plenty tender tank was comprehensively rebuilt to correct a large number of construction problems and now just awaits finishing and is stored at Ropley until the loco is nearer its completion.
When I saw 34067 after it had arrived at Bury for restoration, there were a large number of cut tender plates scattered around the area where the loco was stored, so the kit of parts theory is probably correct.

Thanks for that. The intertwined restoration and use of Bulleid tenders is a nightmare to follow and I am grateful for all input. I have reread several Mid Hants News magazines for 1989-1991 and would add/clarify the following:

    1. In early April 1990 a tender tank from Plenty was fitted to a chassis "for 34105" (Mid Hants News p13 No.65 Spring 1990) This chassis is, I am sure, number 3350 a Bulleid 6000 gallon chassis which arrived at Woodham's yard at Barry with MN 35025. The new tank fitted is a stretched version of the Bulleid 5500 gallon design.

    2. The original 6000 gallon tank from tender 3350 is certainly owned by the group restoring 35025 and therefore presumably did go to the GCR.

    3. "Body for her [34067] tender delivered 24th April [1991]... The tank came from Plenty of Newbury" (Mid Hants News p9 & p16 No.69 Spring 1991) There is a poor quality photo of this tank being lifted for temporary storage on to an LMS chassis in the magazine. So it would appear Plenty built two tanks for Bulleid tenders though whether the second one was fitted to tender 3130 (at present with 34067) seems still unresolved as you have confirmed the kit of parts at Bury.

    4. The question of the old tank from 3130 going to the GCR is still unclear.

If anyone else can help unravel this tale I would be delighted!
