Nothing wrong with shorts, provided they are tailored, tasteful and clean.

 

Two weeks ago, the Fat Duck at Bray. When was the last time you were civil to anyone?

 

2017, February - or march - can't remember. The Belmond. No I didn't wear shorts. Its how you ask the question that implies the level of civility.

 

Along with so much of the dumbing down that has occurred during the last quarter century or more, the 'sense of occasion' has often got lost.

 

People are often refused entry to the main restaurant in Cunard ships for non-compliance with the evening dress-code requirements, but have not seen it enforced elsewhere on board. You can hear the 'tuts' when some arrive in a bar/theater not wearing a jacket! Personally, I wouldn't let it spoil my evenings enjoyment. I've seen many people in formal wear being drunk and behaving badly too many times to judge anyone by how they dress!

 

Maybe, but I much prefer my opera without black tie. Even at Covent Garden.

 

Clearly you wear the wrong colour shorts.

 

Some individuals' thermoregulatory systems evidently differ radically from mine. Early yesterday afternoon in central London, where most people were dressed appropriately for the hot weather, I saw one chap wearing not only collar and tie but a three-piece suit. Even if a suit is expected for his job, and even if he is expected to keep it on when he goes out at lunchtime, the inclusion of a waistcoat seems extreme.

 

All weather sartorial elegance!!

 

I'm not sure the term "sartorial elegance" could be applied to many railway enthusiasts, myself included. There is one character however who turns up to steam galas in a three piece suit whatever the weather. No idea who he is but have seen him quite a few times.

 

"To each their own" as my grandmother used to say.

Let's face it, there's not a lot else worth talking about otherwise on any Saphos thread this year.

 

Bristol Post has report on a roadside fire today. If the hot weather continues, a diesel might be piloting the train.

 

Do not see the point of running steam /diesel combo if the diesel is going to do all the work why goes to all that expense lighting up and ftr just run with the diesel or cancel still a nice day out.

 

I assume this Sundays trip will run with more than the usual level of diesel assistance. Anybody know if it is diesel inside steam, steam inside diesel or still diesel at the back.
I also hope for those in an aircon Mk2 it is working well. I would not want to be shut in a sealed coach on a day like Sunday is forecast to be.

 

LSL loco 47.501 has arrived at Bristol from Crewe this morning with MkII coach 3330.

This gives the possibility of running to Kingswear on Sunday with double-headed or top 'n tail green 47s.

Having just had a journey in a 156 DMU on the middle aged woman express, even with the windows open I can strongly agree with this statement!
