Excellent stuff. I wonder where the other 4 car unit will come from? The NSE Railway Society's Phase 1 4-Cig 1173 would be nice... :smt002

Are there any Cep vehicles left at Shoeburyness?

    To help assuage the doubters,

From my limited working knowledge of the relevant regs. it should be possible to obtain the appropriate derogationsfor using these units on the main-line subject to either a loco (ED?) on the front or the front vehicle not carrying passengers. (An ED would also provide redundancy should a failure occur.) Of course OTMR, TPWS etc would need fitting. Most, if not all, of this is covered in the Press Release.

This would provide the same level of possible use as a charter set (e.g. the loco-hauled sets or the Hastings Unit) and is, of course, subject to appropriate Risk Assessment and Verification.

I dont doubt it at all. I think its a brilliant plan, and wish the new owners all the luck.

Hopefully the Units on the mainline will be able eventually to go solo, without an ED, the same as the Hastings DEMU. I would imagine that with an ED coupled to the train, that the formation would be 8 CIG + 3 Car, due to platforms not catering for 13 cars?

These units are already fitted with TPWS, so just OTMR is the problem.

Not only will these units be valuable as purely EMUT traction, they will be valuable as TC Units. A 33/1 Push/Pull Crompton on the back anyone? 33108/33111 put into Main Line running order, and the 10 point cut-out on the CIGs?

    The list is endless! \:D/

The Hastings unit has derogation because it has the engine compartment classed as a crumple zone. Btw, out of curiosity does anyone know who the private trip is for, or is it a secret?

The TC was definitely blue, unsure what livery the 33/1 was. 60% sure that was blue livery!

All 33's were originally supplied in BR Green. However, the batch converted to class 33/1 in 1967 for use with the TC units beyond Bournemouth were the first to be re-painted into BR blue. Originally the TCs were all-over blue as well, but soon changed to corporate blue/grey.

Yes, I occasionally travelled on it in the early 1980's when it was formed 33/1, 4TC, 8VEP. It gave the best acceleration of any train out of Waterloo. The 8 Vep was booked to be detached at Basingstoke. On one occasion the portions arrived in the wrong order and the 1709 (or 1712 by then) was formed 8VEP, 33/1 & 4TC No great problem until arrival at Basingstoke where the 8VEP was booked to be detached and shunted ecs to Barton Mill CS at the London end of Basingstoke. Before the recent resignalling there were no crossovers at the country end of Basingstoke station. The solution was to shunt the 8 VEP to the DSL by the site of Basingstoke West SB, despatch the 33 & 4TC via the DFL to Basingstoke, then shunt the 8 Vep to Barton Mill. All of this had to be done while running other services.

There were other emu plus 33/1 & TC formations operated on timetabled services. For a few months in the late 1970's the last up stopper from Bournemouth to Eastleigh on weekday evenings was formed 33/1, TC and 4VEP as a stock balance.

What ran on any of the "Q" inter depot workings was anyones guess. As long as the formation didn't exceed the conductor rail index and all the stock was fitted with 27 way westcode control it ran... The oddest formation I ever saw was 33/1, 4 VEP, 4REP (with one motor coach "dead"), 73/1 on diesel power and a 2 HAP!

    Regards, Neil

I'm sure one of our old-hand drivers has mentioned one formation on a Sunday that used to be:
    Crompton,
    2HAP,
    4TC,
    4VEP
    Little ED

All units/locos working as well - what a great idea. Having rolling stock that can couple to everything else that uses the same line. What a piece of genius. I shall have to suggest that to SWT one of these days...

*Thinks: We've come a long way from 3417, haven't we...?*

All appears to be quiet on the Bluebell side of things other than a thread on our Yahoo chat group where the railways General Secretary stated:

I wouldnt be suprised if the sale is being left till the VEP is actually moved to East Grinstead, if the agreement is in place there is no urgent rush and if she is to remain on SWT land for the time being its much simpler for SWT to continue ownership.
