For me, far better it goes up Churston Bank regularly as opposed to an occasional main line sortie, or a shuffle along a short piece of track at a steam centre a couple of times a year. It was wonderful at the G&WR, hope it visits more other heritage railways. The more exposure and availability it gets the better, will help pay the bills next boiler crunch time.

So right Bob, however, more people, other than railfans, will get to see her on the Dartmouth line. Who knows? she may become almost as well known that well hyped 'Scottish' loco. :D

This is very true. However, from the loco's performances on it's SVR tests and on the Glos Warks, all the signs are that 6023 will be a dynamic and free steaming main line performer. I think those closely involved with the loco have great confidence in its ability. I asked the footplate crew how the loco was performing when on test on the SVR and was told they couldn't keep it quiet, regarding steam production when under load tests. Jos's blastpipe appears to be a huge success. Such a pity it can't be let loose on the South Devon main line right now. I reckon it would be a "super King", I think Jos said that in theory, it might be even better than the double chimney 6024.

It would certainly be good to see what she could achieve ascending Hemerdon, not sure if it would be in the same league as Clan Line or DoG but would be damned good to find out...but that dream needs to wait awhile!

I suspect that Dartmouth crews were enjoying themselves immensely, certainly the GWR crews had massive smiles on their faces at their gala a few weeks ago. The driver said the biggest issue was trying to keep her somewhere near the speed limit!

It's funny how the eye becomes accustomed to the lower chimney and safety valve cover. To me, it looks almost normal now. The loco has a real purposeful look, a fabulous engine and so beautiful in the blue livery.

If you want my opinion, Tractive Effort is leading. Clan 33495, DoG 39080, King 39700. Next is whether TE is sustained at speed, Evap area counts + orifice size: Clan 2451 & 5.86 in. equivalent, King 2212 & 6 in., DoG 2490 & 7.78 in.
Quite probably the King falls in between Clan and DoG. Clan should have a larger orifice area of course.
    Kind regards
    Jos

On those figures, a King is not greatly different from the Pacifics, but there are major differences in grate area and superheating surface.

Perhaps it would be better to spin them off to another thread rather than put a premature end to it? I can't say I ever understand much in these sorts of technical discussions, but I find it interesting nonetheless!

If you are interested in an 11-coach train:
"6023 ‘King Edward II’ on load 11 - Weekend of 29/30 September.

In conjunction with its owners, the Great Western Society at Didcot, we are going to test its capabilities on the weekend of 29/30th September.

It will operate with an 11 coach train on all services, operating to the green timetable, with 4 round trips on each day. This will test the engine’s ability, working hard on our gradients from Paignton/Kingswear to Churston. A sight not to be missed!

Our class 25, D7535, will also be on the train for shunting purposes at Paignton & Kingswear.

Rover tickets, giving a days’ unlimited train travel, are available, at £20 for an Adult, £18 for Seniors, and £10 for Children."

So if you still have some doubts, go and look for yourself!
    kind regards
    Jos

If the test report of BR Std class 7 is a yardstick, adhession is the limit at 25 mph.
All british pacifics and some 4-6-0s can outsteam adhession at 25 mph. With two firemen and good coal.
On wet rails one fireman will do.
Loco mass for DoG is 103t and adhessive 67 t,MN 99 t and 66t and GWR King 90 tons and68t adhessive.
Looks like a clear winn for GWR for herritage opperation .Max adhession and minimum loco mass.
