Given the level of detail tabulated in that excellent pdf, could it be that some measure of the amount of shoveage and the point it kicked in might be deduced from studying the respective rates of attrition of speed on the four runs shown? From Wellington 170m 19c to MP171, 45212 was still accelerating, while speeds on 45407's two runs and Nunney Castle's Torbay Express run were just starting to tail away. Overall from Wellington to Beam Bridge, against a just-over 2 mph drop off in 45212's speed, 45407 two runs yielded 9 and 10 mph respectively, and Nunney a whole 14 mph with its heavier load.

Yes agreed. I have already said that I thought the DL kicked in after Wellington and certainly the two key video clips confirm this

According to my timing book, Fred Lewis drove, with Steve Rodenhurst his fireman.

Thanks to both of of you for your detailed work on this (and also Sean with his edhp spreadsheet) - it takes quite a lot of stamina to time quarter miles for any duration. I was brought up on the Brighton line and the most exciting thing was the Brighton non-stops - so that's 200 1/4s and it took some doing not to miss some - so congratulations and thanks to all those who produce really detailed timing data now. I am left with the abiding feeling from 1966-7 of if only we knew then what we know now about recording performance!
