A recent visit to Goathland allowed me to visit the five vehicles in the care of the H&BRSF two bogie coaches, a brake van and two open wagons. Only the two wagons are currently restored. The group are slowly plodding on with the first coach. 20180709_150057.jpg

Oh, didn't know about this! How "under overhaul" is it? Weekly working parties? That's not too far away from my student house...

Edit - It seems from Facebook that working parties there are only on Mondays. :( Blast.
Further edit - Sent them an email on the off chance, I'm quite keen to join a rolling stock group near Sheffield but the LMSCA is just a bit out of reach for me.

Not involved with the group unfortunetly. Just impressed by what they are trying to do for what was a small company. You'd like to think one day they can run all three coaches on the moors.

Be nice to see the Lambton Colliery Kitson turned out in H&B Olive Green at the head of the train one day- was also a H&B design.
As for the Quainton Road, there are no pics, and not sure if it even exists anymore Would love to get hold of what's left of it. Quainton are another linear scrapliner with rusty old stuff. Like that Egyptian sentinel someone must have made a lot of effort repatriating it but its scrap now. Perhaps they had a lot of older guys who moved on and the remaining younger folk don't like the Sentinel?

Quite! Public transport is my only option, and I don't really want to go beyond a tenner in travel costs per week.

Potentially some members based in that area travelling to Goathland. Potential to car share.

There are indeed some H&BRSF members who work on the coaches at Goathland (I think they have working parties every month) so I'm sure you could get a lift if you want to - have a look at their facebook page. It would make a change from Mk 1s, though! They are also working on the coach at Elsecar, but I don't think there are any plans to make that one a runner.

Hi everyone thanks for the interest in the Hull & Barnsley Railway Stock Funds vehicles I am the facebook administrator for the stock fund & would welcome anyone who wants to join the group, we cover all aspects of the Hull & Barnsley but our main aim is the preservation of the remaining rolling stock which the society owns. I will try & answer some of the queries & questions that have been asked in this thread
No.1 is a brake third built in 1885 by Ashburys it is currently at Elsecar & is a body only. the body was used as a holiday cottage in Wales for many years before being rescued. It is hoped that one day a wheelset can be obtained/constructed to complete its restoration. Currently working parties are every monday 10 - 4 anyone is welcome to come along & take a look. for the Sheffield resident a regular train service is available to Elsecar with just a short walk down to the Heritage Centre.
Goathland is the location of the rest of our rolling stock at present efforts are being made to complete one of the compartments on No.40 so we can show interested parties what our aims are. work is also starting on No.58 to stop its deterioration. we are very much at the mercy of the weather out on the moors especially as the stock is uncovered, because of the location work parties tend to be the last Saturday in the month (our working members are from the Pontefract & Hull areas) but efforts are being made to increase work parties whenever possible. hope this is all of interest to you all. John

A collection like that would possibly be worthy of a Heritage Lottery Grant to get it all undercover (and to educate people, of course, in the history of the H&B)?

That would require someone to write an application (I have offered to write a restoration application for them in the past but they're not interested) but, more importantly, somewhere to build it - there currently isn't anywhere on the NTMR. That will (hopefully) change before too long if the NYMR is successful with its current HLF application, which should at least see the coaches go under cover. I don't think it is yet clear whether a new, bigger C & W workshop will be part of that build and whether they would get space in it.

Going back to restoration grants, I see that under the revised rules, grants of up to £250K require only 5% in matched funding, so imho they really should be looking at this route for the second coach.

Indeed, some bits of Coach No.1 have travelled by rail for the first time in almost 100 years, and been cluttering up my room in the interim :) :

Whilst yes there are several organizations like the Lottery that make grants. One of the major criteria for an applicant is they be a charitable trust before applying. Moving on No 40 I think of the pair at Goathland is one of the earliest items of rolling stock to arrive on the embryonic North Yorkshire Moors Railway [preservation Society], her biggest claim if you will to fame is being hauled by former Moors resident Borrows, well tank, Wallsend Slipway No3 "Nellie" which had been converted to oil firing. When the oil jet went out flooding the firebox, tubes and smoke-box with vaporized oil, which when re-ignited blew the smoke-box door off   on an early "members only" run 'tween Grosmont and Goathland. The following photos one being a selfie show myself, Diamond Gaz and H&BR stock fund member John Body working on one of the Goathland carriages[I was off to get some drinks in for us].-

I don't think it is true that a group has to be a registered charity in order to apply to HLF for a grant. The main need is for the group to have a constitution that clearly identifies it as a not-for-profit organisation.
