I would think it is under the local rules for the LNW area as explained by James Shuttleworth of WCR.

Interesting. Two years ago it was declared out of gauge on the Conwy valley line, which was why 46115 has done it. NR must have addressed the issue.

It certainly would be interesting to know the particulars if anyone in the know can spare the time to give an insight.

RTC info to passengers states that steam will work this weekends CME over Shap, so it would seem the "complete" ban has been lifted/lightened. This Saturday will be the day to see if that is correct.

How come these trains aren't very long like other RTC trains

There is a train length restriction on the line and were it to have been steam hauled then the gradient also limits how long a train can go down the line. The limit is six, I think.

It's been noticeable in the last week or so that there has been something coming out of the top on most tours compared to previous weeks where there has been absolutely nothing.

T&T diesel charters regularly have 10 or more on, the platform at Blaenau is long enough for them, however on its own a 47 struggles.

It's clearly a line that doesn't take prisoners. I went there once with 42574 and 42644 double headed and we only had seven on. That said it made the run out from Chester and back with 70004 rather lively. Chester to Prestatyn in well inside even time and the same performance on the return from Rhyl to the signal stop outside of Chester. Bowled along in the high seventies for mile after mile.

Back in October 1983 the Amlwch Angler had a class 40 hauling it from Llandudno junction. We stalled south of Betws y Coed but after a lot of hand sanding we made it to Blaenau.
A sound recording made on the day lasts about 40 mins from the point of slipping to Blaenau tunnel. Weather conditions were wet

I've been behind steam to Blaenau twice.
On 17-10-1999 the first train with 80079 on four coaches stalled, so 80080 had to abandon the second train (also four coaches) at Llanwrst and bank the first one. After both locos had watered at Blaenau they went back for the other train.
On 5-8-2009 45231 (I forget on what length of train) stalled, so we ran back down the hill to Betws-y-Coed and left one coach there.
So don't join a trip on that line if I'm coming.

    Thanks for the warning!

I was on the Mountaineer two weeks after you, again with 45231. The train had 7 coaches, but we left two at Llandudno Junction. On the return we were platformed alongside the Fellsman at Preston, a rare sight. Photos of the trip here:
