I'm visiting the SVR this weekend (the end of steam event) and wondered what folks on the forum think is the best place to go for lunch. In the past we've tended to use The Ship at Highley for lunch. Any thoughts gratefully received

    Cheers

I would agree, but would add the Harbour (just down the hill) at Arley.

If you are prepared for the slightly longer stop in Bridgnorth, there is also the option of walking down the road (from the car park) to the George opposite the entrance to the station

If you are prepared to spend all day in Bridgnorth the upper town is full of pubs!

Captain Cod opposite Kidderminster station is great if you want a chippy.

Kings Head in Bridgnorth, well worth a walk up to high town, The Ship at Highley is a little up and down at the mo, according to Dad. But there's plenty of places in Bewdley and Bridgo to explore, you won't go hungry

The Harbour is reportedly quite nice now. Plenty of choice in Bewdley or Bridgnorth.

Beer wise it was ok the other week, If Someone can keep a decent pint, the food tends to be ok.

Are the food outlets at the railway not the places to go for?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It may depend on what my wife wants but the Harbour sounds promising.

As a general thought about the question Martin asks, we've tended to found that most (NOT all), of the outlets at heritage etc railways tend to be of the "and chips" variety with a fairly limited range of sandwiches (normally pre made and over cold). I know there are exceptions but we've tended to find a good pub has a better range of meals, light bites and sandwiches. We do use food outlets at railways but generally either for teas and coffees or when we are tight for time. Of course the reality is no one visits a heritage railway for the food (dining trains very much excepted)

    Cheers

In my experience, the Flag and Whistle at the Engine House is not particularly cheap* but there is normally a reasonable choice of hot and cold food and it does have the bonus that you can sit on the balcony while you eat and watch as trains pass by. The buffets at Bewdley (Mk 1 coach) and Bridgnorth (portacabin) are definitely 'chips with everything'. The Valley Suite at Kidderminster is great for breakfast if you arrive early but I've not tried lunch there.

*I usually eat there rather than at one of the local pubs because I travel for free as a shareholder so its my way of giving something back to the railway in return.

You're in the minority there I fear. Most people I know go to AJ's cafe round the corner. Much better value for money.

Yep, that's the one. Very good range and flexible. It does get busy (it does mean you know everything is cook fresh though).

  14. I'm staggered that a pork pie and a couple of packets of crisps in the Railwayman's Arms on Bridgnorth station won't suffice anyone for lunch!

I'd much rather have the atmosphere and a good, old fashioned bit of British tucker than mucking about with 'proper' (sic) food

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the King and Castle, a good selection of beer too

It came to something a few years ago when the diesel groups at Kiddy stopped drinking there and going down the road, I must say around the same time I found myself avoiding having a pint there. But 3 weeks ago, when I was home I found the beer decent and you could get a cob, crisps and a pint for £5:50, it really had improved

The change of staff 2 years ago has really helped it. Far better selection now, especially I'm a cider man.

It was fine when I was there, good pint of Bathams and the staff were OK too. I didn't have food but what I saw coming out looked good.

When I first started visiting the SVR (late 80's, early 90's I suppose) the Railwayman's Arms did excellent rolls of the ham/beef/cheese + salad type variety. I would usually buy two, have one with a pint and put the other in my bag for later. Unfortunately, pork pies and crisps excepted, if you want something to eat with your pint, you now have to visit two different sites. Hopefully, when the new arrangements are complete and in operation, this will no longer be the case, but we'll see.

Another good food stop if you're prepared to walk about 10 minutes from Bewdley Station is 'The Mug House Inn and Angry Chef Restaurant' along the riverside in Bewdley town centre. Good food and a good variety of drinks are available.
