If it was my decision, I think I would make sure it was built to main line standards (pun not really intended, but sort of unavoidable). I'm not entirely sure what that means, but probably includes choice of materials, completeness of documentation and certification etc. Having said that, this may already be the case for all I know.

Main line running could then be considered in the future, if there was a viable case for it. However, I completely get the argument that it is a locomotive best suited to heritage line running rather than the 'big railway'.

I would love to see 82045 available to run main line but for its first year or two it should take the best financial opportunities doing the rounds of suitable heritage lines in addition to the SVR. Then put out an appeal for the cost of the necessary gubbins required to run main line. As an 82045 donor I would certainly respond.

Possibilities as to were it could run need exploring and if feasible and with a successful appeal then go for it. Tyseley and possibly Worcester shuttles come to mind. No doubt there are a myriad of obstacles to be overcome but isn't that what the preservation movement does.

he logistics work for a Tysley shuttle but are not so simple for Worcester as that requires a reversal in KD mainline. It would be a question of timetabling. Diesel convoys get away with it because there is a loco top and tail, propelling out on to the main line is I believe a no no

The phrase 'rolling chassis' has been used in model engineering for miniature locomotive construction for a considerable period of time to denote when the stage of construction has reached just that ie a rolling chassis. Wheelsets completed with axleboxes and inserted into a set of frames with hornstays and with all frame stays and buffer beams added. Springing not yet completed in most cases. Coupling rods probably added and no 'binding' as the loco chassis is pushed along a section of track or along the bench to and fro.

    Cheers,

    Julian

"Frames" is ambiguous anyway as it can mean just two flat pieces of steel or those plus stays assembled together. When you've attached the cylinders, the frame extensions at the front (e.g. for Churchward locos), the front buffer beam etc, what can you call it?

I suggest you can argue with it, on the basis that it is over-simplistic and generalised.
'Vehicle' here means road vehicle, where I agree that the word 'chassis' has been used for decades, maybe from the early 1900's?
Whereas the word 'chassis' has not been used in the context of a steam locomotive until recently in the preservation era. I think it has only crept into use in the last decade.

I seem to remember in Bell's 'Locomotives' he argues that pedantically that whole assembly minus the boiler is the 'engine', and then complete with boiler it becomes a locomotive. This is quite logical as an extension of stationary engine practice where the engine and boiler sit alongside each other as seperate items.

I would agree that the use of the word chassis when referring to a steam locomotive has only crept into use very recently, In the workshops they had frame shops not chassis shops.

Great photograph Tom! On the subject of railway works being organised differently, take into the war years when vast swatches of the Big Four's output was no longer railway but munitions, aircraft and other war effort productions and the locomotive building/renewing side of things might look incredibly different. I know this is true of Doncaster/Darlington/Gorton and Stratford works in WW2. Much emphasis on changing the nature of local repairs at shed too.

Thanks for collecting this stuff in a separate thread.:)

Just a thought from me, could this thread be titled for example; "Railway terms - questions and answers" ?

I`m sure there will be further more interesting discussion of other railway /locomotive related terms. :)

    kind regards,
    Knut

Oh I do hope not, it's like listening to a dripping tap you thought you had repaired.
BTW, £200K isn't a tremendous amount of money, if said quickly, if that is what's standing between us and a brand new BR Standard 3MT.

That update mentions "recent publicity regarding a possible future on the mainline" and later that "the die is cast now". So what was the conclusion of the consultation with members? Main line or not?

I think last months update stated that although there were many responses, I seem to recall 100 plus. By a small majority members were not in favour of main line running, which could get in the way of the earliest possible completion of 82045. Maybe the position could be reconsidered at the first Heavy General.

That is my recall of the of the relevant paragraph, but a quick search should give you all the information you require.
