Preston Services website used to show 4 of these engines for sale, it now shows one.
Have 3 been sold and who to?

Re: Preson Services Luttermoller 0-10-0 locos

There were five Luttermollers at Preston Steam Services. I held off from posting here in the hope that someone could answer authoritatively that they are still there. As far as I know they are.

O&K 11309 disappeared from the website in late 2008 / early 2009, whereas 10957, 12470 and 13101 stayed on until c8/2010, leaving just 10956 now. All five were reported in June 2010. I assume that it is felt that there is little point in advertising five identical locos – just advertise one and if someone shows interest offer them a choice.

There are other locos at Preston that do not feature on their website: 15” gauge Barnes Atlantic BILLIE, 18” gauge Bagnall 4-2-2 wks no 1425 of 1893, and a 15” gauge Herschell – these belong to the Museum Trust.

There is a steam rally at Preston 25/26th June, if anyone fancies checking on the stock.

    Did anyone attend?

(By accident or design, the website does not currently have any narrow or standard gauge locos listed.)

Much as I hate to resurrect an ooooold thread, but I was wondering what the story behind these was? They look like mightily intersting bts of kit Pity about the mightily big price tag!

They are all ex Argentina. OK 11309, the brown one stored under cover, arrived at Preston by 2/2003 ex Ingenio Concepcion (a sugar mill). The four red ones all arrived by 2/2006 ex San Martin del Tabacal. Whatever that was.

Tabacal was another sugar mill Ken. If I remember correctly, the gauge at Tabacal was 650mm and not the usual 600mm Also, there are perhaps a couple more of these Orensteins still there, albeit, stored.

    Cheers,

Preston's website now shows 4 Luttermöller locos still for sale, and one having been sold. The one sold is no. 13101 which it claims went for the across the board price of 35 grand (except 11309 which looks in worse nick but is priced at 40 grand, see below).
Anyone know who bought 13101, and where it went? One assumes these Preston prices are open to haggling?

I didn't think they were, that's why so many locos have sat there for years unsold.

One wonders if they're being sold on behalf of someone who has to get the full amount to cover their costs, or if Preston just have a very rigid business model?

I wonder why one of these hasn't found its way into the Statfold collection - it would be an interesting example of something technically different to the run of the mill stuff.

Probably because there's already 30+ engines in the collection as it stands now! Never mind the unrestored stuff that is safe/awaiting its eventual turn for revival.

The SBR's going through a bit of a change as things have been split between the small permanent team in the Museum Trust, and the engineering firm. The latter of which is amazingly busy with a rather full order book!

So until stuff settles in I doubt there's going to be many new engines added or emerging just yet. Let alone bought.

Now that the annual traction engine rally is no held there, does anybody know whether they allow visits to the site to view the locos?

Probably depends upon whether they think you're a credible prospective buyer

My personal experience of PSS is that they have no interest in selling anything. Emails get very abrupt responses, sold items are rarely changed on website. Have pretty much stopped bothering to look now.

Thanks to the previous 2 posters, I can be reasonably confident then that I won't get to see them then!
I hope one does get sold and restored, as I would like to be involved in it's restoration, it looks an interesting loco mechanically.

Preston Steam Services still has several of these locos for sale (ranging from £35K-40K), with only one marked as sold.
These are described as being very powerful, but I assume the reason for them not selling is that they have too large a wheel-base for most 2 foot lines, even with the Luttermoller system? It may well be that the restoration costs would be too large, and their speed may be too slow.
Any thoughts on these locos and whether they'd be appropriate for two-foot lines in the uk are welcome!

The price is more off putting than anything else. They've been for sale for as long as I can remember.

I'm surprised Statfold Barn haven't got one as something technically out of the ordinary.
