Hi-Viz - is that an adult satirical comic?
I think the guys involved were trying to re-create things as properly as they could by portraying how it was in the 1960's.
I guess the painter is in a real risk situation of the diesel jumping off the track and knocking him from the ladder. Orange jacket would prevent that? Hmm.
Nothing meant by my comments, either way. :D

Fair comment & I have nothing against that. :)

But in today's risk averse society I'm sure H&S would be having kittens........ never mind, there's no one footing the ladder........ sod 'em say's I & let common sense rule for once. ;)

About the ladder, if we were being correct, as you say it should have been "footed" but is probably jammed against the track/rails. If so, the track should have been closed and suitably protected, there should have been a COSS to over see the job. The ladder appears to be made of wood, not recommended by the HSE, hopefully is on an auditable ladder register held by the Railway's Manager of H&S.
The ladder is incorrectly situated against the wall, it should be higher than the job so the workman paints overlooking the job. In the position he is there is a strong temptation to lean backwards, he does not appear to be secured to the ladder or structure in any way.
And so on, and so on, and so on!! Where does it stop, I don't know? However, although I don't hold a track side permit for any heritage railway, I do hold a full Network Rail PTS (including both 25KV ac and 750V dc) and have done for over 10 years. I am also the Health and Safety Manager for the Company which still employees me three days a week. I passed an iconic anniversary a few weeks ago, 50 years of working in the chemical industry, I still don't know all the answers (don't expect to), still learning, but a lot more experience for judgement than I had when I started.

    Okay........

25KV & juice rail scare the crap out of me having lost a school friend to the former, who thought it a good idea to wire walk on a viaduct on the Crewe - Man Pic line.......

As for the ladder - I disagree - ladders on ballast are not on stable or level ground...... then you have the 'problem' of where the painter is...... to me he's in the right place so you can see what you're doing, but lacking a kettle hanging off a rung to dip in to..........

    That's if we're being PC/pedantic........

To me the sooner common sense comes back into this world the better! :Saywhat:.......... I won't hold my breath......

    Oh dear...
Trying to spot myself in the one of 92212 in the up platform... and forgetting I would've been on the down...
Some nice photos there, but no Lancasters... that definitely didn't cause three of us to scramble frantically up the footbridge, and definitely didn't cause the lense cap from my camera to end up in the 6 foot under the bridge, to be retrieved by a certain gentleman named Dave...
