    Agree with that point. Years ago we looked at connecting up Bronwydd crossing to the signal box wheel on the Gwili. The major problem we found was that much of the equipment required is below ground level. Our box also wasn’t “square on” to the crossing. In the end we opted for a two-gate system.

    I think it’s only Blue Anchor that is connected in this way on heritage railways, unless anyone can think of any others?

    Regards

    Matt

    In just the same way that if electronic signalling had been available, then building a signal box would not have been considered.....................

    When we excavated the original crossing we found a lot of the gate rodding & stops buried under the tarmac. The rodding was only fit for scrap.
    The railway inspectorate insisted that the box was positioned next to the crossing so that the signalman could see approaching road traffic.
    At some stage in the future we could rebuild the the original box (the footings & locking room floor are still there, buried under the up platform) using cctv to monitor the traffic although a gateman would still be required.
    We also only had a four day road closure to complete the job.
    The original Corwen Station box was a different design to the one going on the new station. I'm sure it will look great when it's finished.

    I am not entirely convinced there was much left;

    I spent a number of days back filling that platform using a dumper, to drive in the infill along from the crossing end and cannot remember much in the way of obstructions.

    Hello Martin,

    I was putting a new fence corner post in where the platform steps back & struck brickwork. On excavating further I found the bottom locking room steps & the brick floor, so there is probably still a good base still under there.

    I don’t understand why you think you would need cctv and a separate gateman, surely that was not how the GWR did it.

    Traffic on that road tends to approach at faster speeds than the horses & carts did in GWR days.

    I didn’t realise that was such a busy main road, but I still don’t see why you would need cctv if the gates were worked from the box whereas the signalman at present has to take his life in his hands dodging speeding cars to work the gates by hand.
