Noting the request for favourite images / videos brings to mind that a couple of years ago I sent a CD of 60009 images to John Cameron and his reply indicated his pleasure at receiving them. Perhaps those contributing to this thread might like to consider sending copies of their efforts to JC as a token of gratitude for the pleasure he has given by keeping the locomotive working for so long. Only a thought - mind !

It's certainly a nice thought, Fred.

I have to say what a joy this thread is.

Thank you for letting us know about the favourable reception of your pictures by Mr. Cameron. I have wondered about sending him a copy of my picture of Number Nine at Battledown (see first page of this thread) as I rather like it - in fact, a 10" x 8" image of it graces my study - even though I'm really first and foremost a Southern man! From what you say, it sounds like he might like it too in which case I'd be delighted to provide him with a copy.

Mono one taken at Petteril Bridge Junction in 1991 when No. 9 was dispatched from Carlisle to Appleby as a result of 4472 running low on water with the northbound leg of a CME. Changeover should have been at Carlisle.

New Biggin on the S&C in 1984, on one of its rare forays off the mainline on the E Lancs Railway in November 2014 and near where I saw my first A4, approaching March at Manea, I remember spending an afternoon at March with my cousin when the East Coast diversions were on one Sunday, I think in 1955

Favourite memory is of spending 3-4 days cleaning No. 9 at Bounds Green depot before a trip to Scarborough. We were delayed on the return approaching York due to lightning strikes knocking out the signalling. Eventually we got into York and got told to get away ASAP. I think Donny was made in about 30 minutes, and we had been cruising most of the way in the mid 80s. The tyres on the support coach had been turned the previous week to get rid of some flats. The approach to Donny wasa tad rapid, so much so the brake application ended up putting the flats back on the wheels!

Just the one photo from me. 25th October 2014, crossing Digswell viaduct moments after sunrise. It was worth staying up after a night shift for that!

My favourite memory is of riding behind her northbound over the S & C in, I think, 1984 when she set fire to half of West Yorkshire. I was doing a sound recording from the front coach and passing through Blea Moor Tunnel was like going through a meteor storm with all the sparks flying by. On arrival at Garsdale, Mr.Cameron jumped down from the footplate saying, '' We've got the record, we've got the record'' (fastest northbound from Settle Junction).
Unfortunately the faces on the SLOA officials showed that they didn't seem to share the enthusiasm, realising the consequences of the fires.

I was wondering if anyone would mention this one. It still is the northbound record over the S&C and most likely always will be. No.9 also holds the all time single headed record between Ormside and Ais Gill - the Blue Riband section, but only load 8, so not an official blue riband run.

I was on that one. The driver was Edwin Altham a Skipton man, sadly no longer with us. I think someone mentioned the word 'fire' and he must have thought we were going to one, the speed he took us up the 'drag'!

My favourite memories of Number 9 when I got a footplate ride on her at the Barrow Hill LNER Gala in April 2009. But my favourite memory of them all is riding behind her on the mainline in 2007 from Cleethorpes to Morpeth and return far as York, standing for Green Arrow. It was fantastic run especially on the ECML at 75mph one of the best mainline steam trips that I ever been on.

Think I was helping the regular support crew at BG too and Keith Jackson had to come over to do the FTR.
Was that also the occasion a set of mobile scaffolding had to be used as depot (GNER?) personnel were worried the support crew would fall off the usual ladders, etc. whilst getting her ready?

What a great trip that was.
I was in a group of Swanage Railway footplate staff having a nice outing. They didn't know the driver but I had made his acquaintance during my support crew days when Flying Scotsman was based at Marylebone. It was Driver Trevor Barnett's (steam) retirement run - and possibly his best ever. Not bad for a Tyseley steam man!
The loco performed faultlessly, so far as I could tell as a passenger, and didn't sound to have been thrashed at all down Whiteball Bank.
