Everytime I look into Tornado I learn something of interest, the kind of bearings used on the tender being the latest example. Lets hope Mr Elliot's good news makes the copy deadline for the Beano...

So at last it all seems to be leaking out that when Tornado decided to throw pieces of its inside motion all over the ECML four months ago, maybe that was the result of rather more than 'just' a lubrication issue. It is indeed very good news that things seem to be coming together but rather worrying that it appears the forensic examination of the locomotive has revealed separate (or related) issues with the motion, otherwise why would so much work appear to have been taking place since the incident?

No doubt the report when it is released will reveal all or all we are permitted to know. There's a bit of me that continues to hope this failure turns out to be something simple rather than something more complicated such as mechanical or structural damage caused by the 100 mph thrash that remained hidden until this April. Either way, the important thing is whether there is any transferrable learning that can be of value to other main line locomotive owners. If it's just the A1ST that needs to refine its build and maintenance regime then so much the better as at least they will be able to move forward more confidently with their other project.

But you've now missed Summer,:) ok you didn't miss much # steam ban
Now onto Tornado , All parts made have been to what ever modern spec material is a direct replacement to what was originally specified , and as such I would say is beyond anyone's control , if x spec isn't available, but the modern equivalent is, and on paper and under test performs to the same parameters then surely you would use it, what happened was unforeseen but now we are where we are, the question though is, had the drop link not failed like it did, how much worse would the damage had been? see some parts may be designed to fail in that way to prevent more severe damage to the rest of the motion ?

What do you see to that effect in this latest report? They had already mentioned finding something wrong (cracking?) in one of the bits of the outside valve gear, hence needing to replace that as well, but there is no connection between that and the seizing of the inside valve.

:oops: yes mental block , yes combination lever but when you look at any valve gear / motion, there are always parts that will in the extent of an major failure of the moving parts will deflect or fail before the engine tears its self to bits, not withstanding rods deciding to dig into the ballast and pole-vault the loco into the station canopy

Aren't you forgetting that heavy maintenance work was carried out on the loco between the 100 mph event and April?

No, but what they are talking about now seems unlikely to have been picked up on maintenance, heavy or not. However, apparently I've started a hare running and that was not the intention so I'm off back into the burrow.

If any organisation is going to give a full uncensored report, I would put A1ST at the head of the list.

They have nothing to hide, they will learn from it, and build back towards the goal of 90mph running, I am sure.

I can imagine its a complicated series of events that have transpired to cause the failure, and we should await the official report.

242 pages, so this may have been asked and answered before.
Why is it necessary to achieve 90 mph? Is 80 mph. not a reasonable speed?

Probably not worth the extra paperwork for just 5mph over the current max. Though you could argue if an extra 15mph is!

What a daft question, it was clearly just to show off! There is no substantive reason whatsoever to run the loco at 90, it’s all just for vanity points!

Makes it easier to find paths for her on the busy UK Mainline, particularly the ECML.

Pathing in an increasingly faster and busier railway.

Ah - post crossed with @D1002

The ECML is now so busy they had to upgrade the Lincoln line to Peterborough to get the freight off the ECML after years of the Lincoln line being just a six-day, sixteen hour railway.
