September's issue of Steam Railway Magazine features the launch of the project to build not one, but two Manning Wardles - namely YEO and EXE - both to be built at the same time. YEO will be built at at Killamarsh, Derbyshire, and EXE at Boston Lodge, Gwynedd.

    More news to follow shortly...

Please may I be the first to say that the precise shade of green they are going to painted in will be very slightly different from what I think it should be therefore invalidating the whole project.

What company is at Killamarsh, Derbyshire, that can build a loco?

Great News - Looking forward to seeing Exe, Yeo, Lyn and Lyd all steaming together at Blackmoor one day! Certainly proves that the L&B is well and truly no longer asleep! Very exciting times at Woody Bay.

I think this might be the group that has just finished the WD Hunslet 1215

Interesting that Alan Keef hasn't been selected as one of the sites.

Hugely exciting news though - will be nice to see a Manning Wardle with the right roof profile!

Are they to be built to Imperial dimensions with Whitworth standards or metricated?

Well what I really want to see is LSWR Drummond green, with salmon-and-brown coaches to match ;)

But seriously - it's very exciting news and I wish the L&B all the best with these projects.

Fantastic news- will be lovely to see.

How much variation was there between the MW locomotives over the years?

Will the new ones be built to represent different time frames so present the evolution/developments of the locomotives as they were used over the years?

I wonder how much additional development will be built into the new machines- as I understand quite a lot of additional development went into Lyd to address some of the shortcomings of the original designs?

An update has been posted on the members section of the L&B website.

This describes the project as aiming to build "new locomotives" rather than replicas. The L&BR Trust owns the Manning Wardle brand so the locomotives will be assigned new works numbers 2048 and 2049.

An interesting take on the replica/new build discussion.

Presumably they'll have the curved cab backs of the original MWs, rather then the straight cab of Lew. Was there also some variation around the cylinder covers?

    To Lynton and to Barnstaple??;)

Great news though. I am visiting later this year to see Lyd and Lyn together, the prospect of 2 more M and W's is mouthwatering....

Nice to see that they aren't going to recreate Lew, it helps keep the dream alive that it is still out there somewhere, waiting to be found.

Is the existing Yeo frame fit to be used in the new loco?
From what I heard, there were quality issues with locos built by its manufacturer.
