Steven, if your good lady finds, in the meantime, that a Manor Class locomotive is what she likes to see and hear, may this could be a good substitute.

Enjoyed my visit to the WSR yesterday but the fact that the charter didn't pause at Blue Anchor meant that it was impossible to both cover the line and also ride the WSR services. So I opted away from the charter and just went to Williton and back from BL.

My reward was a really feisty run with 7822 hauling eight coaches that needed quite a punchy effort from the little one. All credit to the crew for the performance and the time keeping. Under specific instructions from @Robin Moira White a picture is attached.

In passing - and please don't let it start an unnecessary debate as it is only an observation - whilst the exchange of tokens and transfer to the other service is a lovely historical piece, if it were conducted with a little more pace then possibly it might help with time keeping when things are tight, as yesterday. (By the way that is not a comment aimed at those in the photo. It was a discussion amongst some charter passengers about the wider operation of the WSR)

Good picture of one of the regulars on this forum and others of course. I was at Williton yesterday as a days wagon restoration was called for. The new half floor was test fitted and looked good.

What really worried me were the rumours of a Coup De Tete, It appears that some junior directors intend to oust the Chairman. I find this of great concern as the Railway is just settling down following other upheavals. This would not be the right time to try to take over the plc by some back door method. Our Ian Coleby has done great pulling one railway together and to throw that out whilst some directors, with unproven track records, attempt to take control would be sad. My impression was that a lot of very loyal volunteers would seriously consider walking away. If this is real it could herald the demise of the WSR as we know it.

I'm sure this has been discussed at great length not that long ago; from experience my opinion is that firstly if the timetable is carefully written and everything lines up then the only delay to a non stop service is the need to slow to 10mph; and secondly if a signalman walks briskly then for a stopping train the signalling tasks take less time than normal station duties.

I would probably use a slightly different stance myself, but some of these things are personal taste, and most signalmen I've discussed it with do find that exchanges from platforms have a more awkward stance than exchanges from track level. Moreover still photos of exchanges can be rather misleading.

It actually wasn't to do with the physical exchange of tokens (as shown in the picture). That's presumably written down somewhere as best practice in avoiding a transfer 'glitch'. The discussion was more to do with the time that the token can take to get from train A to train B before either can move.

Lest we all get too serious about our hobby, I thought the following pages from Railway Magazine of April 1974 might lighten the mood.

They might be subtitled ‘The travails of Captain Miller in DRAG’, although the pre-occupation of Mrs Miller with folk in funny hats had me laughing near uncontrollably between trains here in Dorset.

    Enjoy.

Speaking from a position of total and abject ignorance, is it the case that diesel trains are allowed to run at 40 m/h on the current WSR ?? [As implied by the entertaining 1974 article.]

No. All trains, no matter what their method of propulsion, are limited to a maximum of 25 mph on the current WSR.

No. We never completed the additional work that would have been required to allow this. And subsequently we have done work (reduction of super elevation, for example) which is inconsistent with this.

I wish to travel on the wsr on Saturday but unlikely be able to receive annual pass in time, if one buys a day rover and then applied for annual pass is the day rover ticket price knocked off the cost of annual pass or will it still cost £62. Thanks

Suggest you go to the WSR website, look at the conditions for purchase of the Annual Pass and all will be revealed! (the answer there is that you can reclaim the cost of your day ticket if applying for the annual pass within 7 days of travel)

Cheers, the website wasn’t loading for me, hence the question.
